Chris is a Senior News Writer for Collider. He can be found in an IMAX screen, with his eyes watering and his ears bleeding for his own pleasure. He joined the news team in 2022 and accidentally fell upwards into a senior position despite his best efforts.

For reasons unknown, he enjoys analyzing box office receipts, giant sharks, and has become known as the go-to man for all things BoschMission: Impossible and Christopher Nolan in Collider's news division. Recently, he found himself yeehawing along to the Dutton saga on the Yellowstone Ranch.

He is proficient in sarcasm, wit, Photoshop and working unfeasibly long hours. Amongst his passions sit the likes of the history of the Walt Disney Company, the construction of theme parks, steam trains and binge-watching Gilmore Girls with a coffee that is just hot enough to scald him.

His obsession with the Apple TV+ series Silo is the subject of mockery within the Senior News channel, where his feelings about Taylor Sheridan's work are enough to make his fellow writers roll their eyes.

When Netflix renews a crime show this quickly, the next question is always the same: how soon can it get back in front of cameras? With Dept. Q, that timeline has stayed a little murky ever since Season 2 was officially announced, even as the Matthew Goode-led thriller kept building momentum as one of the streamer’s sturdier detective dramas. But now things are a little less murky.

According to a new production update, Dept. Q Season 2 is set to begin filming in Edinburgh, Scotland on July 13, 2026, with shooting expected to continue through December 11, 2026. The update comes via What’s on Netflix, which cites issue 1493 of Production Weekly and notes that the schedule shifted from an earlier expectation of a spring start.

That is a pretty major step forward for the Netflix detective thriller, which was officially renewed in August 2025. At the time of renewal, Netflix confirmed that Matthew Goode would return as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, alongside Alexej Manvelov as Akram, Leah Byrne as Rose, and Jamie Sives as Hardy. Netflix Tudum also confirmed that creator Scott Frank would return to direct the second season. Season 1 also featured Kelly Macdonald, Chloe Pirrie, Mark Bonnar, Shirley Henderson, Kate Dickie, and Steven Miller in key roles.

Is 'Dept. Q' Any Good?

Collider’s review stated that Dept. Q is a dark, occasionally darkly funny police procedural that shows plenty of promise, even if its first season occasionally struggles under the weight of an overstuffed mystery. Anchored by a compelling performance from Matthew Goode, Netflix’s new detective drama delivers an entertaining whodunit that hints at even greater potential if the series continues beyond its debut season.

Dept. Q's performances in general are strong, though it's worth mentioning one clear aspect of missed potential. Manvelov is certainly game, but the script never gives his character Akram much shading; he's generally just quietly helpful, with bursts of aggression. Surely some of the screen time dedicated to investigating lead after lead would have been better spent giving Akram more depth and backstory. It's rather representative of a thriller show that attempts to do more than it should, rather than focusing intently on what it needs to do. Adler-Olsen has written ten novels and counting, so if Dept. Q finds an audience, there should be plenty of material to work with moving forward. If that happens, hopefully, future installments of the series will be as good as its acting.

All episodes of Dept. Q are now streaming on Netflix.
