Harris is one of the most prominent character actors in Hollywood, with a rich and diverse career that spans more than four decades. Harris' breakout role came in James Cameron's epic The Abyss, and launched a successful career which has seen him scoop four Academy Award nominations, as well as winning two Golden Globes.
After a successful TV spell on Westworld, Harris joined the cast of Sheridan's hit Yellowstone spinoff show Dutton Ranch, which premiered in 2026. The show was a success on streaming platform Paramount+, but it is another of Harris' projects that has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity on streaming this month.
Appaloosa is a 2008 Western, directed, co-written by, and starring Harris, alongside Viggo Mortensen, Renée Zellweger, and Jeremy Irons. The movie follows two lawmen hired to police a lawless mining town, whose relationship is put to the test by the arrival of a manipulative widow. Grossing a little over $27 million against a budget of $20 million, Appaloosa was not a box office success, but received a strong critical response upon release.
Now, 18 years later, the movie is enjoying a new lease of life on streaming platform HBO Max. Per FlixPatrol, Appaloosa currently sits at #3 in the Top 10 Movies on HBO Max on June 30, 2026, ranking just below King Ivory and They Will Kill You, which sit at #2 and #1 respectively, and just above Ben Affleck's The Accountant 2 at #4.
Appaloosa's talented cast, which sees Harris reunite with Mortensen after they worked together on David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, works in its favor, which, along with its gritty realism and interesting story, has helped propel it up streaming charts. What's more, the Western genre has been invigorated in recent years thanks largely to Sheridan's influence, and the success of shows like Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923.
With work on Dutton Ranch and a meaty role as The Man in Black in Westworld, Harris is no stranger to the Western genre, and his strong involvement in Appaloosa is likely what has helped it to resonate with audiences. How long Appaloosa will remain on the HBO Max charts for is unclear, but the fact it is performing strongly means there is cause for optimism for those hoping it can continue to clock more viewing hours headed into July.
