WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender seasons 1 & 2. Azula (Elizabeth Yu) uses lightning powers in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, a concept that comes from the original series. Despite only appearing in the final episodes of ATLA Book 1’s finale, Azula was heavily featured in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1. From flashbacks to scenes that were not in the animated series, the cast of Netflix’s Avatar show included some surprises compared to the source material. Not only did Azula appear in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1, but the live-action series also included a technique that only debuts in Book 2 of the original show.

Although Azula didn’t get to use her power early on in Netflix’s ATLA, she briefly used lightning powers following a training exercise hosted by Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim). The live-action series does not offer much context on this skill at first, but the animated series and its sequel, The Legend of Korra, can help viewers understand how lightning generation works. When Azula returns during Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, her powers are far more significant to the story. Azula's portrayal as an elite firebender makes her one of the season's strongest elements, and recreates powerful ATLA moments.

Lightning Generation Is A Special Type Of Firebending

While the term “lightning bending” has been used in the original series and by ATLA fans, a more accurate description of this ability would be lightning generation. This is because lightning generation is not so much its own type of bending as it is a sub-skill within firebending. In other words, only firebenders can use lightning generation. As explained by Iroh to Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender Book 2, a firebender needs to find balance and inner peace before they can use lightning generation, which is a very refined art.

Another lightning-based subskill of firebending is lightning redirection, which is when a bender redirects a lightning attack thrown at them. Similarly to lightning generation, only firebenders can use lightning redirection. Avatar: The Last Airbender’s lightning powers must not be confused with the special blue fire used by Azula in the animated series, which a different skill that Azula didn't use in the show's first season. Lightning attacks are more precise and refined compared to the usual firebending techniques, and this was a relatively rare skill before it became more popular amongst the Fire Nation’s elite.

Why Azula Has Lightning Powers In Avatar: The Last Airbender

Based on Iroh’s description of what it takes to use lightning powers in the Avatar world, it is curious that Azula, who always had inner struggles, mastered it. That said, Princess Azula was a firebending prodigy since she was a child, which is why it is not really surprising she was able to master lightning generation. Azula is an extremely skillful firebender and must not have had a problem with learning lightning techniques. Whether Azula learned lightning generation on her own or was taught by her father, who can also use it, is difficult to say.

In the original Avatar: The Last Airbender series, Azula uses lightning powers on screen for the first time shortly after her introduction. Azula also uses it in her first major battle on the show when she encounters Zuko and Team Avatar at the beginning of Book 2. In Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, Azula uses it in front of her father to impress the Fire Lord as she announces her wish to join the action. As the series continues, Azula appears to grow in her power, making her a fierce and dangerous opponent as ATLA moves into next season.

Who Else Can Use Lightning Generation In Avatar: The Last Airbender

For centuries, lightning generation was a mythic technique that many did not believe existed. In the larger Avatar canon, some of the first documented cases of lightning generation use come from Avatar Kyoshi, who once faced an enemy who could use this special type of firebending. At a later point in the Avatar: The Last Airbender timeline, lightning generation became relatively common in the Fire Nation, but only among the royal family and a few high-ranking officers. During the events of ATLA, only Azula, Ozai, Iroh, and technically any Avatar could use lightning generation.

Aang never actually used lightning generation in ATLA, although he did use lightning redirection during his fight against Fire Lord Ozai in the series finale, “Sozin’s Comet.” Likewise, Zuko never used lightning generation on screen but he was able to redirect his father’s lightning attack. In The Legend of Korra, set 70 years after Avatar: The Last Airbender, lightning powers had become far more common than it was in the original series. In addition to characters like Mako, The Legend of Korra showed that even non-fighters were now able to use lightning generation to operate machines.

What Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 Reveals About Lightning Powers

As Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender continues to reinforce many of the ideas that originally made lightning generation a feared ability, the show also ensures that Azula is multi-faceted. Throughout the season, Azula is portrayed as an elite firebender who is precise and disciplined, separating her from other firebenders. Treating lightning as an elite technique rather than a common part of firebending makes it clear that Azula is a force to be reckoned with, and Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 ensures viewers are aware of her power after her lightning strike leaves Aang severely injured by season's end.
