The Housemaid is reaching the end of the road with one final feat for Sydney Sweeney.

The Housemaid has been in theaters for roughly five months, but its run is just about coming to an end. Although the film is already available on streaming, it was able to cross one final box office milestone to seal the deal for Sweeney. According to Box Office Mojo, The Housemaid has now made over $401 million worldwide against a $35 million budget. As a result, it's officially the first Sweeney movie to cross the $400 million milestone and will likely be the last major feat.

Thanks to the massive box office success, Lionsgate quickly greenlit the sequel called The Housemaid's Secret, which is also based on McFadden's book. Sweeney will reprise her titular role as Millie Calloway, while Paul Feig returns to the directing seat. It's expected to start filming sometime this fall.

Part of the massive success was the star-studded cast, which also consisted of Amanda Seyfried and Brendan Sklenar. The Housemaid reviews were also very positive, with many critics comparing it as a callback to erotic thrillers of the 1980s and 1990s. The premise follows Sweeney's protagonist, who gets hired by a wealthy family. However, both parties have dark secrets that slowly unravel and lead to jealousy, heartbreak, and deception. The Housemaid currently has a 73% rating and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

One major factor was that the suspense movie was released in December, which is turning out to be a sweet spot for the star. Sweeney previously had seen a similar success when Anyone But You was released in December 2023. The rom-com became a massive hit after making $220 million against a $25 million budget and helped launch her and Glen Powell's careers.

Given this pattern, the upcoming The Housemaid sequel has secured a December 17, 2027, date, which comes exactly two years after the original. It will also compete with the highly anticipated Marvel movie, Avengers: Secret Wars. Kirsten Dunst has already been confirmed as the first new cast member. Michele Morrone will also return as Enzo, the groundskeeper for the Winchester family.

If the sequel follows the book, Millie gets hired by the Garrick family, but she is forbidden from interacting with the matriarch, Wendy. That's when she starts to suspect domestic abuse and plans to take matters into her own hands. The novel won a Goodreads Choice Award for Best Mystery & Thriller in 2023.

After a rough year, it seems that Sweeney is once again thriving both in movies and on television. She returns as Cassie Howard in Euphoria season 3, which also seems to be the final. She is also filming The Custom of the Country, while the live-action Gundam and the biopic Scandalous are in development.

The Housemaid is now streaming on Starz, while The Housemaid's Secret will release in December 2027.
