Sydney Sweeney has finally sealed a box office record.
The Euphoria star has quickly become one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood, especially following the major success of Anyone But You, which made $218.9 million. Since then, Sweeney has become more involved with making movies, and in 2025, she featured in five films. Among them, the biggest hit turned out to be the thriller adaptation of Freida McFadden's novel, The Housemaid.
Sony has reported that The Housemaid is projected to make $383 million at the global box office after being in theaters for nearly two months. This would officially be the highest-grossing movie of all time for any Sweeney movie, breaking the record previously held by Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which made over $377 million worldwide.
There are several reasons why the box office record is monumental. Firstly, Sweeney had a small role in the Quentin Tarantino comedy, where she portrayed one of the members of the Manson family, "Snake." In contrast, she played the lead as the titular protagonist, Millie Calloway, in Sony's The Housemaid.
Furthermore, the record is a major box office redemption for Sweeney, considering her 2025 movie slate was relatively tough. While Echo Valley went straight to streaming on Apple TV, Americana, Eden, and Christy had theatrical releases. However, those three movies performed poorly at the box office. In particular, Christy holds an unfortunate record with the worst second weekend drop, with 92%.
As a result, Sweeney became a major conversation, especially since she was already in hot water with her American Eagle Great Jeans ads. While the actor initially tried to brush off the criticism, she eventually gave a more direct response, saying, "I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true." Nevertheless, Sweeney became a divisive figure with audiences.
.
Considering she had a really rough 2025 with back-to-back box office flops, The Housemaid ended her year with a major rebound. Despite releasing against James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash, the film came in third during its debut weekend. However, the thriller gained momentum through word of mouth, as the second weekend only saw a 19.5% drop. Reviews of The Housemaid were generally positive, with praise for the cast, the fun, major twist, and its callback to 1980s and 1990s erotic thrillers.
As a result, the film gradually became a box office hit and easily recovered the $35 million budget. In addition, Sony also confirmed the development of a sequel based on The Housemaid's Secret, with Sweeney and director Paul Feig returning. It's expected to have a production start sometime in 2026, while the release date is unknown.
In the meantime, Sweeney will return as Cassie Howard in Euphoria season 3, which premieres on April 12, 2026, on HBO Max. In addition, she also has a few movies currently in pre-production, including Scandalous and Custom of the Country, while Netflix's live-action movie Gundam is actively casting.
The Sweeney adaptation follows the titular housemaid, who gets hired by a wealthy family. However, the situation in the household intensifies as dark secrets between the housemaid and the family start to unravel. The Housemaid cast also features Amanda Seyfried, Brendan Sklenar, and Michele Morrone.
The Housemaid can either be rented or purchased digitally. Currently, there is no confirmation of when the thriller will be available on streaming.
