If the depths of the ocean already scare you, Renny Harlin’s latest film, Deep Water, is poised to heighten that tension. The thriller follows a group of plane crash survivors stranded at sea, forced to confront a far more immediate danger: sharks circling beneath them. Starring Aaron Eckhart, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Molly Belle Wright, the film marks Harlin’s return to shark thrillers — a genre he previously dominated with the 1999 movie Deep Blue Sea.

Set for release on May 1, Deep Water taps into a long cinematic tradition of shark-driven terror that dates back to Steven Spielberg's original blockbuster: Jaws, so sharks are part of the very DNA of the modern Hollywood lens. This time, Harlin combines that familiar fear with a survival narrative anchored by a strong cast. The official description for Deep Water reads:

"A flight from Los Angeles to Shanghai goes down in the middle of the Pacific. After surviving the crash, the survivors soon discover they’re not alone, and they must survive the shark-infested waters."

The good news is, they have boats. The bad news? The sharks very clearly are not letting an inflatable raft stop them from their next meal. The predators circling them prove relentless, turning every moment into a fight for survival in classic Renny Harlin fashion. Eckhart and Kingsley play the pilots, who must work band together with the remaining passengers to navigate both the aftermath of the crash and the escalating threat beneath the surface if they want to make it out alive.

Renny Harlin and Sharks Are a Winning Combination

For many viewers, a fear of sharks has been shaped as much by cinema as by reality. Jaws set the standard, with moments like the shark’s ominous and terrifying appearance beside the boat remaining iconic decades later. Renny Harlin's Deep Blue Sea made those fears that much worse with its heightened, relentless approach to the genre. With Deep Water, Harlin appears to be continuing that tradition, crafting a story designed to leave a lasting impression on audiences. Let's just hope these sharks don't creepily make eye contact with their prey.
