Stephen King's Carrie and HBO's Euphoria are both coming-of-age stories. However, from a thematic standpoint, they are both significantly different. While Carrie dabbles with supernatural elements to highlight the terrors of adolescent alienation and social cruelty, Euphoria is more about teenagers struggling to find their place in the world.

Interestingly, an upcoming series on Netflix, titled The Body, will seemingly combine some of the best elements from both Euphoria and Carrie.

Created by Quinn Shephard, The Body is an original Netflix TV series, scheduled to premiere on November 11, 2026. As its official synopsis reveals, the show centers on a high-school dance team whose initiation goes terribly wrong. With what follows, a group of Catholic school girls claim to have prophetic visions as they wreak havoc and trigger mass hysteria in their town.

As its premise itself suggests, The Body will be a gritty coming-of-age drama with bold visuals and disturbing explorations of faith and religious fanaticism. While only time will tell whether the Netflix horror series will be as promising as it seems, its inspirations suggest that it has the potential to become the streaming service's next big hit.

Upcoming Netflix Show, The Body, Is Inspired By Carrie, Jennifer's Body & Mean Girls

As the show's creator, Quinn Shephard, has revealed, Netflix's The Body heavily draws from some of the most iconic coming-of-age movies, like Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures, and Mean Girls (via Tudum). While the show is being touted as the perfect spiritual successor to Jennifer's Body, its Carrie inspirations seem far more intriguing.

Mike Flanagan just delivered his own take on Stephen King's Carrie, which has been both a critical and commercial hit. Netflix's The Body, too, could tread the same path if it manages to explore the same unsettling but explosive female rage that made Carrie a horror classic. Its premise suggests that it will thematically unfold at the same intersection between religious guilt and awakening sexuality.

Similar to Carrie, the show will also seemingly use the heightened atmosphere of strict religious rules as a narrative device to mirror confusion and shame tied to growing up and finding one's identity. While little seems to be known about the show's supernatural elements, its trailer alone teases that, like Carrie, it will not hold back on depicting the disturbing consequences of repression.

The Body Is A Horror Series, But It’s Visually Similar To Euphoria

Unlike some of the more grounded teenage dramas like Skins and Sex Education, The Body seems hyper-stylized and gritty from a visual standpoint. In more ways than one, it almost seems reminiscent of HBO's Euphoria as it walks through chaotic sequences of coming-of-age drama in the trailer.

In many scenes, it adopts the same cinematic, dreamlike neon-lighting that became the visual identity of Euphoria. While Euphoria's visual ambition seemingly exceeded its thematic depth in the final season, the high-gloss atmospheric visual flair in The Body seems to be in tandem with its horror undertone.

The subtle shades of Stephen King's Carrie and HBO's Euphoria in Netflix's The Body make the upcoming horror series even more exciting. Owing to this, it is hard not to hope that the series will be as thrilling as Mike Flanagan's Carrie or Euphoria's seasons 1 and 2 (if not better).
