Star Trek Generations: Picard's Rescue In Deleted Scene Ignores Kirk's Death

A deleted scene from Star Trek Generations awkwardly ignores the death of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner). Directed by David Carson, 1994's Star Trek Generations culminated with Kirk's death after his historic team-up with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). Star Trek Generations has a 48% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although the audience score ticks higher at 57%.

Star Trek Generations ended with a seismic event beyond Captain Kirk's death and burial on Veridian III by Captain Picard. An attack by the Klingons led to the destruction of the USS Enterprise-D, which Picard was unaware of. Jean-Luc was solely focused on teaming with Kirk to stop Dr. Tolian Soran (Malcolm McDowell) from destroying the Veridian star system in order to re-enter the Nexus.

On Instagram, @star-trek-shots shared a deleted scene from Star Trek Generations that shows how Captain Picard was rescued from Veridian III by a shuttle containing Lt. Commanders Worf (Michael Dorn) and Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton). Picard asks about "trouble with the Klingons," as he doesn't know what happened to his Enterprise. Meanwhile, there's no mention of Captain Kirk. See the deleted scene below:

Star Trek Generations wisely deleted this scene. While it's interesting to see exactly how Captain Picard was rescued from Veridian III, the scene creates more issues than it solves. First, the sequence isn't necessary and breaks the momentum of Star Trek Generations' ending.

More importantly, the substance of the deleted scene is awkward comedy that undercuts the tragedies that just occurred: On Worf and Geordi's side, they have to report that the USS Enterprise-D has been lost. Meanwhile, Picard fails to mention the monumental event that not only did he meet Captain Kirk, but that the Starfleet legend just died, and Jean-Luc buried him under rocks atop a mountain.

There are also logical issues involved with this Star Trek Generations deleted scene. The Enterprise may have crashed, but the crew's communicators would still be functioning. Worf and Geordi, and/or Commander Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), should have contacted Picard and already updated each other's status before their shuttle rescue.

Star Trek Generations has fundamental issues, but it holds a seminal place as the first Star Trek: The Next Generation movie, the historic team-up between Captains Kirk and Picard, Kirk's death, and the passing of the Star Trek movie torch to the TNG crew. Picard's rescue from Veridian III is fascinating to see, but it belongs on the cutting room floor.
