Since its launch back in 2010, Final Fantasy XIV has been a major contender in the MMORPG genre courtesy of its multiple award-winning expansions, regular updates, and dedicated fanbase. As such, it is still going strong to this day, and even though its most recent expansion, Dawntrail, was not received as well as previous entries, fans are still holding out hope for the next, Evercold, which is set to launch in January 2027.

Thanks to a huge fanbase and its multiple accolades, Final Fantasy XIV is one of the most successful MMORPGs of all time, but despite its success, one FFXIV game has now become unplayable forever.

Final Fantasy 14 Mobile, which was developed by Square Enix alongside help from Tencent, has officially shutdown as of 30 September 2026. This is not the first Square Enix mobile game to shut down, but it is definitely the biggest, and whilst FFXIV will still boast a large playerbase on PC and console, it is still a massive blow to the community who enjoyed spending their time in Eorzea on the go.

Until now, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has only been available to play in mainland China, but it seems as though it will never receive that global release as its servers have now been officially closed.

"Due to adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment," reads the official statement, "Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement for FINAL FANTASY XIV MOBILE." In the statement released earlier this year, Square Enix also detailed the schedule, with the operation finally reaching an end later this month.

  • 18:00 (UTC+8), July 17, 2026 — In-game top-ups and new user registrations will be suspended.
  • 11:00 (UTC+8), September 30, 2026 — Game operations will officially cease. The game servers and the official website will be shut down, and players will no longer be able to log in.
  • 11:00 (UTC+8), October 15, 2026 — The forums and dedicated customer support will be closed.

It may have been a mobile game, but with Final Fantasy XIV being as successful as it is, it is strange to see its mobile version shutting down before it even had the chance to flourish globally. However, it is not all doom and gloom as its PC and console versions are still going strong as fans eagerly await the launch of Evercold in the new year.

Not only that, but the hit MMORPG also welcomed its Nintendo Switch 2 version back in August, giving its fans yet another platform to head to Eorzea on. It seems that, despite this sad news, Final Fantasy XIV is still around for the long haul.
