Spaceballs 2 has gotten a major progress update from co-writer Josh Gad, who reveals just how far along production is on the upcoming sci-fi comedy sequel. Spaceballswas originally released in 1987, the Mel Brooks-directed movie acting as a parody of Star Wars. The upcoming Spaceballs 2was announced in June 2024, being developed by Amazon MGM Studios and produced by Gad and Brooks. Gad was also revealed to be writing the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Pokémon Detective Pikachu), while also being announced to star in the comedy film.
Speaking with Forbes, Gad revealed the draft script for Spaceballs 2 is complete, and that readers of it have "been blown away." The co-writer and star explained how support from Brooks has been extremely helpful in developing the movie, especially since it coincides with the joke about the sequel Yogurt made in the original. However, he made sure not to give away any surprises. When asked about the sequel potentially being titled Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, he simply said "Watch this space!" Without MGM taking me into their Culver prison cells, I can tell you that the draft is done. Everybody who’s read it has been blown away. The process of working on this with and alongside Mel Brooks has been one of the highlights of my career.
It was sort of a fever dream that this all happened. Mel has been so unbelievably supportive, involved, and electrified by this because it’s the one that surprisingly got away. It’s a dream to be able to finally make the reality prophesied by Yogurt in the first movie happen. I can’t say more than that. I can’t tell you anything beyond [the] process at this point, but I can tell you every hour of every day right now is spent making this project closer and closer to reality — and I think we’re nearing the end zone here.

What Gad's Update Means For Spaceballs 2
Production Is Going Smoothly
There are currently no details about what the sequel's story is going to entail, other than the movie will be spearheaded by director Josh Greenbaum (Strays). Although it's unclear if Spaceballs 2 will feature returning actors, the end of the original movie laid the groundwork for another adventure featuring Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and Barf (John Candy). However, the latter would need to be recast due to Candy's death, making it unclear if the sequel really will follow the same group of characters as the original.
Spaceballs 2 might finally be happening 37 years after Mel Brooks' original movie, and there are several reasons why it took so long to move forward.
Luckily, with Disney producing so much Star Wars content since 2015, the parody will have plenty of material to pull from when poking fun at the franchise. Spaceballs 2 can spoof other sci-fi movies as well, like Avatar or Dune, aligning with the many references to '80s sci-fi films in the original. Since the script is already impressing those Gad speaks to about it, there seems to be no shortage of hilarity that will ensue during the forthcoming film, indicative of just how impressive a sequel it's going to be.

Gad's update is very good news for Spaceballs 2, signaling the movie will likely resemble the feel of Brooks' older works, such as the original. Although there's still not much known about what to expect from its story and characters, its current status indicates more will be revealed sooner rather than later. Now that the script draft is done, revisions, casting, and filming will soon be done, meaning the sequel truly is closing in every single day.
