The Gilded Age Season 3 Gets Encouraging Filming Update From Star 1 Year After Season 2 Finale

2 hours ago 2

With nearly a year gone since the previous season came to a close, Carrie Coon has an exciting filming update for The Gilded Age season 3. Hailing from Downton Abbey vet Julian Fellowes, Coon has starred in the period drama as Bertha Russell, matriarch to the Russell family who looks to use her "new money" wealth in late 1800s New York City to break into the local elite society, which includes their neighbors, the old man Rhihn-Brook family. Having garnered rave reviews in its first two seasons, The Gilded Age season 3 was confirmed after season 2's finale and began filming in July 2024.

During a recent interview with Screen Rant to discuss her crime dramedy Lake George, Coon was asked for an update on The Gilded Age season 3. Though she didn't have a more concrete window for when the season will premiere, the two-time Emmy nominee confirmed that filming is coming closer to an end, heading back to Newport "next week" for more shooting in the Russell family's mansion. Check out what Coon shared below:

We're shooting it right now, honey. So, hopefully, we'll be wrapping up by January, and then they'll do all their CGI business and get it out to the people. But we're having a great time. It's a great group of people, and I'm having a ball doing it. I'm headed to Newport next week for more mansion time. So it's great.

What This Means For The Gilded Age Season 3

The Show Will Still Return In 2025

While Coon may not have had a concrete update on the show's return, HBO themselves have already confirmed The Gilded Age season 3 is being eyed for a 2025 premiere. Recent promotional material from the network's 2025 lineup, which has also included looks at The Last of Us season 2 and Peacemaker season 2, has at the very least given a brief glimpse at the next season while promising its imminent return, even if not indicating an exact window.

That being said, in looking at the schedule Coon mentions above, it seems very likely The Gilded Age will aim for a similar release as season 2 in late Fall 2025. While it's likely that the show is already in the editing process for its next set of episodes, HBO has plenty of other titles in their lineup for next year to avoid wanting to rush the period drama through its post-production process.

8 Historical Events & Scandals The Gilded Age Season 3 Needs To Cover

Julian Fellowes' The Gilded Age is full of juicy period scandals and historical events, but there's even more that could be included in season 3.

Additionally, given the fall is when both movie and TV networks look to release their prestige projects for awards consideration, repeating season 2's October premiere date makes the most sense for The Gilded Age season 3. This strategy proved effective for the show's previous season, having landed six Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and both Outstanding Lead and Supporting Actress for Coon and Baranski. While it may not have brought home any of its trophies, losing to FX's breakout hit Shōgun and The Crown's Elizabeth Debicki for the latter acting category, it did shine a further spotlight on Fellowes' show.

Our Take On The Gilded Age Season 3's Progress & Release Chances

Patience Is Always A Virtue With Fellowes

While multi-year waits between seasons have become a disappointing trend in many TV shows nowadays, Fellowes has, at the very least, always proven that patience is a virtue with his projects, and The Gilded Age is no different. Season 1 was a generally enjoyable romp, but season 2 actually took the time to get a little more insightful with its storytelling, something critics agreed with, as the Rotten Tomatoes score jumped from 79% to 94% in season 2. With the three-year gap between his Downton Abbey movies also showing consistently great work from the Oscar winner, I have no doubt Gilded Age season 3's wait will pay off.

The Gilded Age TV Poster

The Creator of Downton Abbey returns to the small screen with The Gilded Age, a period drama set in the late 1800s in the United States. When Marian Brook's father passes away, she leaves to move in with her two aunts, two well-to-do women at the center of New York City's social system. However, the old-money socialites find their world disrupted when a young and wealthy couple moves to New York, showing Marian there may be more to life than the rigid societal traditions of old.
