Smurfs will bring the beloved blue cartoon characters to life on the big screen once again, and there are already a ton of exciting updates about the 2025 movie. The Belgian comic series debuted back in 1958, and The Smurfs grew over the decades into a bona fide multimedia franchise. The premise is rather simple, and follows the little blue denizens of the Smurf village as they face challenges from the evil wizard, Gargamel. Across comics, cartoons, feature films, and video games, the lore of The Smurfs grew.
Though The Smurfs had appeared in cartoon films in France and Belgium, the American film series is where the little blue icons became big screen heroes. 2011's The Smurfs blended live-action and CGI animation, and was a box-office smash that grossed over $500 million (via Box Office Mojo). A sequel followed in 2013 that was marginally less successful, and a third film was scrapped. 2017's Smurfs: The Lost Village was something of a reboot, but failed to move the needle. Now, Paramount has produced Smurfs, a star-studded CGI animated film that looks to return the franchise to box office glory.
The Latest News On Smurfs
The First Trailer Is Revealed

Ahead of the movie's debut in July 2025, the latest news arrives in the form of a full trailer for Smurfs. Introduced by pop star Rihanna (who voices Smurfette), the trailer kicks off with the Smurfs enjoying their lives in the idyllic Smurf village. However, a mysterious force sucks them into the real world where they must team up with Papa Smurf's estranged brother (played by Nick Offerman) to take on the evil wizard Gargamel and his brother Razamel. From what's shown in the trailer, the movie is going for a Trolls vibe, with abundant pop music and ultra-modern humor.
The Release Date For Smurfs
Smurfs Could Be Yet Another Summer Blockbuster

First announced in 2022, Smurfs has been chugging along behind the scenes. Now, the animated epic has secured a release date, and will arrive in theaters on July 18, 2025. Summer is perfect for a movie like Smurfs, and it's clear that Paramount has lofty hopes for the blue icons. However, Smurfs will have some stiff competition in July. Though it premieres earlier that month (on July 2), Jurassic World Rebirth might siphon some of the audience of Smurfs. While the animated film is clearly going for a younger audience, it could still lose out to the more established franchise.
Smurfs: The Lost Village premiered on April 7, 2017.
Cast Details For The Smurfs Movie
Rihanna Leads An All-Star Voice Cast
Perhaps the biggest aspect of the upcoming Smurfs movie is its all-star voice cast, and Paramount pulled out all the stops with their reboot. Leading the charge is international pop star and actor Rihanna, who has assumed the role of Smurfette. Unlike previous iterations where Smurfette is the damsel in distress, she will now be the de facto leader in Papa Smurf's absence. Speaking of the wise bearded Smurf, Papa Smurf is voiced by acting legend John Goodman.
