With no warning whatsoever, FromSoftware has announced a major update for its hit RPG, Elden Ring. Taking to Twitter/X just moments ago, Patch 1.16.2 will arrive following a period of service maintenance that begins at 00:00 PDT | 09:00 CET | 16:00 JST for a duration of 3 hours.

Released back in 2022, Elden Ring has cemented itself as one of the greatest and most influential video games of all time, and is considered by many to be FromSoftware's magnum opus, so it is perhaps no wonder that major updates, a DLC, and crossovers have been launched over the past four years. However, it is also hard to believe that Elden Ring is still yet to celebrate its fifth anniversary, showing just how much content players have received since its launch.

Now Patch 1.16.2 is finally here, which includes "fixes for stability issues that could cause freezing, unexpected termination, or rendering anomalies under certain environments." With FromSoftware thanking fans for their "enduring patience", it appears that this update will be a perfect quality-of-life improvement.

No, it does not include any new content, but there is nothing worse than having to deal with bugs and stability issues when playing a game as incredible as Elden Ring, and so any small update will still be impactful. Not only that, but with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition expected to launch soon, it makes sense that FromSoftware is working to make the base game as stable as possible.

Following the news of the arrival of Patch 1.16.2, fans took to the comments to share their thoughts on FromSoftware's latest free download. "Hmm, preparing your servers for something?" One user speculated. Another fan felt the same, adding, "The fact that they’ve specified that this maintenance doesn’t include anything gives me hope that it’s in preparation for something." Another said, "OK, OK, hear me out. The maintenance itself doesn't include additional content, but could it be necessary to allow for additional content? Like...the maintenance is happening...and then boom additional content."

FromSoftware is yet to confirm if this free download is making way for any additional content, or if it is truly just a quality-of-life update that helps to make the base game even better. I am thinking that it may be the latter, especially as the studio is currently working on both Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. As such, I do not think that it would drop random DLC for Elden Ring, but then, we used to think the same about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

For now, Patch 1.16.2 for Elden Ring remains a simple patch to help boost performance and stability, but who knows what this might mean for the future of the award-winning RPG?
