Spoiler Alert: This list contains spoilers for Shrinking Season 3, Episode 2.Time for another session in Season 3 of Shrinking. Widower-therapist Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) has even more on his plate this time around. Life after loss hasn't been easy, but with grief becoming more manageable and grudges forgiven one by one, Jimmy is slowly reentering society as a more emotionally aware man. At this point, it's more important than ever for him to get his life in order. With his daughter Alice (Lukita Maxwell) about to leave college, Jimmy must face the reality of an empty nest.
Thankfully, he isn't entirely alone. Jimmy has a tight-knit, if questionable, group of co-workers, friends, and even patients supporting him along the way. However, before moving forward, there are unresolved issues the characters must confront. Without further ado, Shrinking Season 3 needs to address these things.
1 Will Jimmy Find Love After His Wife's Death?
Image via Apple TVOver the past two seasons, the last thing on Jimmy's mind has been love. Still weighed down by the grief of losing his wife, he struggles to stay present and keep moving forward, even as that loss continues to pull him under. While trying to rebuild his relationship with his daughter, Jimmy also has to care for a steady stream of troubled patients in his office.
Season 2 finds Jimmy in a slightly better headspace, but his progress is shaken when the man responsible for his wife's death suddenly reappears. Confronting that trauma proves difficult, yet amid the mess, there's a hint that Jimmy might be capable of opening himself up again. That possibility grows after he crosses paths with Sophie (Cobie Smulders), who is selling her Mini Cooper, suggesting that there may still be a life for Jimmy beyond mourning.
2 Will Alice Move Away for College?
Image via Apple TVLike her father, Alice is also struggling with her mother's death — if not even more so. Once a promising student-athlete, she begins to falter as her grief manifests in different ways, from slipping grades to pulling away from her friends. Loss initially blinds her to the support around her, but over time, she starts to see a light on the other side.
After a season filled with teenage mishaps — from sleeping with her best friend's boyfriend to feeling anxious about attending school parties — Alice has grown a lot. Following her 18th birthday, she's about to embark on the next phase of her life: college. She initially sets her sights on the East Coast with a soccer scholarship, but doubts creep in when she realizes she'll be leaving her father behind. Though staying home is an option, Alice knows she's meant for more.
3 Will Gaby Truly Get Over Her Commitment Issues?
Image via Apple TVGaby (Jessica Williams) may have a stellar career as a therapist and adjunct professor, but her social skills leave much to be desired. She has a habit of making questionable choices, none more notable than starting a friends-with-benefits arrangement with her co-worker Jimmy after a failed engagement party. To their mutual surprise, it feels good at first. Still, once the dust settles, Gaby realizes they need distance and decides to step away.
In Season 2, Gaby is introduced by Liz's husband, Derrick (Ted McGinley), to an acquaintance of his — also named Derrick (Damon Wayans Jr.). Though Gaby insists she doesn't have time for a relationship, the more she spends time with him, the more interested she becomes. But the moment Derricks asks her if she's serious, Gaby immediately shuts down, self-sabotaging her happiness in the process. While they manage to reconnect, Season 3 may truly test Gaby and Derrick's boundaries.
4 What Is Louis' Next Step in Life?
Image via Apple TVNo one wants to come face-to-face with a ghost from the past. Jimmy receives an unexpected visit at his office from Louis (Brett Goldstein), the drunk driver behind the accident that killed his wife. Louis arrives with the intention of apologizing and taking responsibility for what he's done. Understandably, Jimmy violently lashes out, ordering Louis to leave and never return.
Alice, however, responds to Louis differently. She doesn't warm up to him at first, but as she slowly opens up about her mom, she starts believing that forgiveness is possible. Alice comes to learn that Louis has lived a deeply unhappy life since the accident. At his lowest point, he nearly takes his own life until Jimmy arrives just in time. From that moment on, the two find unexpected solace in one another, and Season 3 might see them supporting each other on their respective journeys.
5 How Will Dr. Paul Rhoades Face His Worsening Illness?
Image via Apple TVDr. Paul Rhoades (Harrison Ford) may appear to be a pragmatic, no-nonsense senior therapist on the surface. Deep down, however, he's anxious about Parkinson's slowly taking over his body. For most of his life, the solution-oriented man has believed he had everything under control. Now, his diagnosis forces him to realize that time is no longer on his side. Once retreating in his fortress of solitude, Paul has gradually opened up to his estranged daughter and his co-workers.
That support becomes crucial in Season 3 of Shrinking. By Thanksgiving, Paul's tremors worsen, and his medication stops working despite being pushed to the maximum dosage. Yet it isn't the physical symptoms that trouble him most — it's the fear that Parkinson's will rob him of the ability to be a reliable therapist. Season 3 pushes Paul to accept help from others, even if it means revealing his most vulnerable self.
6 How Will Brian and Charlie Face Parenthood?
Image via Apple TVBrian (Michael Urie) and Charlie (Devin Kawaoka) are Shrinking's ultimate dream couple: young, vivacious, and seemingly with endless possibilities at their fingertips. After a beautiful wedding surrounded by their loved ones, Charlie suggests they start a family, sharing that he has always wanted to be a father. Ever the people-pleaser, Brian agrees to move forward with Charlie's adoption plans.
In reality, Brian is terrified of becoming a parent. It's not that he dislikes children — he's afraid he won't be the father his child deserves to have. Much of Brian's storyline centers on learning to be honest with Charlie throughout the adoption process, even when it leads to difficult conversations. When they ultimately decide to pursue parenthood through surrogacy, Brian and Charlie face a new challenge: learning how to become fathers from scratch.
7 How Will Liz Embrace Her Role as a Part-Time Nanny?
Image via Apple TVLiz (Christa Miller) has lived a full life — and she's far from done. Introduced in Shrinking as Alice's de facto caretaker and Jimmy's eagerly intrusive neighbor, Liz thrives on being needed. Once Alice begins to find her footing, Liz is left feeling aimless. That restlessness leads her to partner with Sean (Luke Tennie) on a food truck venture, a project that ultimately ends with her handing over her shares to Sean's father.
Since then, Liz has found herself in the midst of a midlife crisis. When Brian and Charlie announce they're having a baby, Liz's husband, Derek, suggests she step in as a part-time nanny. Given how well she knows the couple and the fact that she's raised three boys, Liz knows more than enough about children. But with Liz's enthusiasm, she might need to learn where to draw the line, especially when the baby isn't hers.
8 Will Sean Move Out of Jimmy's Pool House?
Image via Apple TVSean has grown tremendously since his first therapy session with Jimmy. Returning home after being deployed overseas isn't easy, especially at just 22 years old. Carrying so much trauma, Sean is prone to lashing out over even the smallest inconveniences. It takes a combination of Jimmy-ing and Paul's more traditional methods for Sean to understand his condition, but he's now far more in control.
Much of the first two seasons of Shrinking follows Sean as he adapts to civilian life. He learns how to function as an adult and begins rebuilding his family relationships, including his hard-headed father. The next step for Sean is moving out of Jimmy's pool house, where he's been living since getting kicked out of his own home. Still, something tells Sean he isn't ready for such a big change, and that he may need more time.
