Sequel To 18-Year-Old Cult Horror Movie In Development, Original Director & Cast Returning

1 week ago 5

The cast and crew of the cult-classic horror comedy Black Sheep are reuniting for a surprise sequel. Directed by Jonathan King, the 2006 feature sees a traumatized farmer's son return home to put his trauma behind him, only to learn his brother has been conducting cruel experiments to turn the docile herbivores into contagious, bloodthirsty mutants. Black Sheep was a success at film festivals, leading to it earning positive praise alongside grossing $5 million from its box office run.

Deadline has reported that French production company WTFilms has joined forces with King to uncover the next stage of the virus seen in Black Sheep with a sequel 16 years after the original movie. While few plot details have been revealed, Black Sheep 2 will see a young scientist set out to cure a potentially deadly pathogen before it can cause a pandemic, only to be brought to the remains of the Oldfield Farm that has stood by her hometown.

King has penned the script alongside Matthew Grainger and Rosie Howells, while Nathan Meister will reprise the role of Henry Oldfield in the sequel. While no other cast members of the original movie have been mentioned, it has been confirmed that several returning stars will make appearances. Production is expected to begin in either March or April 2025.

The Original Movie Left One Dangling Plot Thread Unresolved

While the newly revealed details only offer a brief summary of the events of Black Sheep 2, it is clear the movie will pick up on the small tease from the original movie's ending. After Henry helps find and distribute a cure for his brother Angus' strange but deadly killer sheep virus, he soon disposes of the infected and mutated livestock in a fiery conclusion, only for it to be revealed that the family's sheepdog may have contracted the virus. As such, the sequel may see the poor pooch unknowingly pass on some of the deadly virus, perhaps allowing it to adapt.

With a potentially new deadly form of the sheep virus on the loose, it will be interesting to see what twisted horrors will be grazing once Black Sheep 2 arrives. Despite such a strange choice of monster, Weta Workshop, the special effects company behind both The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Avatar, among many other high-profile productions, will return to provide more gruesome visuals. Black Sheep Sheep Eating Body 2

Perhaps one of the strangest examples of a modern "zombie" movie, Black Sheep wears its absurdity on its sleeve. From killer sheep to twisted farmers and horrific hybrids, the movie revels in its silliness and plays it absolutely straight while offering enough gore and violence to challenge the most iconic features in the genre.

As such, it isn't yet clear if Black Sheep 2 can recapture the success of the original movie while avoiding simply retreading its story and expecting the same impact through the absurd premise alone. However, with much of the original cast and crew involved in the new movie, there is a chance that Black Sheep's surprise sequel will dare to top an already strange, but distinct horror comedy.
