The worst movie of Jim Carrey’s entire career — and it’s not even close — is a grisly crime thriller that doesn’t have a single positive review counted on Rotten Tomatoes. Carrey has starred in many great movies. His tenure as a movie star kicked off with a triple whammy of classic comedies, one after the other: The Mask, Dumb and Dumber, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. He’s made great straightforward comedies, like Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty, and he’s made quirkier, more outside-the-box films, like The Truman Show and The Cable Guy.
But Carrey has also had his fair share of disappointments. The long-awaited sequel Dumb and Dumber To was a massive let-down compared to its iconic predecessor; The Incredible Burt Wonderstone has a hilarious premise and a star-studded cast, but it plays it too safe; and Kick-Ass 2 is completely lacking the first movie’s sense of fun. But Carrey’s true worst film makes all of these look terrific by comparison. His worst movie isn’t an unfunny comedy; it’s an unengaging thriller.
Dark Crimes Was Critically Panned And Had No Redeemable Qualities
Dark Crimes Never Lives Up To Its Fascinating True Story Or Carrey's Committed Performance
In 2016, Carrey starred in Dark Crimes, telling the true story of a detective who spotted eerie similarities between a cold case murder and a bestselling mystery novel. Despite having a fascinating true-crime story and a committed Carrey, Dark Crimes was a dreadful movie that earned a rare 0% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The biggest problem with Dark Crimes is that it always feels like it’s about to kick into overdrive and deliver some thrills, but it never gets past that anticipatory phase. It’s a deeply disappointing entry in the thriller genre, because it’s not thrilling in the slightest.
Dark Crimes grossed just $21,216 at the box office.
The other times that Carrey has stepped outside his comfort zone to explore darker dramatic material has yielded some of his best work. The Number 23 is a really creepy, lurid horror movie. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an existentialist masterpiece about a heartbroken loner getting lost in his own altered mindscape. But where Carrey’s tonal departure worked beautifully in those movies, Dark Crimes left a lot to be desired.
Jim Carrey Has Thankfully Been In Much Better Thrillers Than Dark Crimes
The Bad Batch & The Cable Guy Were Far Superior To Dark Crimes
Thankfully, the underwhelming Dark Crimes isn’t Carrey’s only stamp on the thriller genre. He also had a scene-stealing turn as “The Hermit” in Ana Lily Amirpour’s gonzo dystopian thriller The Bad Batch, which was much more memorable. The case could be made that The Cable Guy, one of Carrey’s most underrated movies, is as much a psychological thriller as it is a comedy. Jim Carrey has proven he can make a great thriller, even if Dark Crimes is far from it.
Dark Crimes is a thriller directed by Alexandros Avranas, featuring Jim Carrey as Tadek, a detective investigating the murder of a businessman. As Tadek links the crime to a novel by a controversial author, he navigates a dark and morally complex world. Co-starring Marton Csokas and Charlotte Gainsbourg, the film explores themes of guilt and obsession within a grim and atmospheric setting.
