Scary Movie is frightening audiences away from theaters in its second weekend.

2026's Scary Movie is the sixth installment in the horror parody franchise and reunites many cast members from the original 2000 film, including Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Regina Hall, Anna Faris, and Cheri Oteri in a new entry that lampoons horror movies that have been released since 2013's Scary Movie 5, including Get Out, 2018's Halloween, 2022's Scream, Sinners, and The Substance. The movie debuted on June 5 with a 3-day domestic gross of $54.3 million that marked the best opening weekend of the entire franchise, not adjusted for inflation.

While it hit an early high, the movie is now plummeting. Per TheWrap, as of Saturday morning, Scary Movie is projected to earn a 3-day domestic total of $15.6 million by the end of its sophomore weekend. This sees it dropping a staggering 71.3%, which is by far the worst drop of the franchise. Even though its opening weekend was the best by a margin of nearly $5 million, its 3-day total is now the fourth worst sophomore haul of the franchise, landing $10.6 million below the previous peak (the original 2000 movie), not adjusted for inflation.

Below, see a breakdown of the week 1 and week 2 performance of all six Scary Movie movies, not adjusted for inflation:

In addition to earning the worst drop of the franchise by a wide margin, if these numbers hold, Scary Movie will secure a spot on the chart of the 200 worst week 2 domestic drops of all time, landing around No. 180 between Cuckoo (-71.2%) and Justin Bieber's Believe (-71.4%).

While the horror genre tends to be frontloaded, often resulting in week 2 drops of 60% or more, that curse doesn't usually extend to horror-comedies. In fact, while the chart of the 200 worst week 2 drops includes six horror movies from 2026 alone - We Bury the Dead (-85.7%), Faces of Death (-82%), Psycho Killer (-80.6%), Scream 7 (-73.3%), 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (-72.6%), and The Bride! (-76.4%) - it contains just four horror comedies from any year at all - namely 2022's Studio 666 (-77.8%), 2004's Club Dread (-76.6%), 2025's Hell of a Summer (-75.8%), and 1991's Popcorn (-71.3%).

However, it seems to be more than the genre that has resulted in this record-shattering sophomore drop. After all, even though horror has been suffering from record-breaking drops at an unusually high rate in 2026, the new low-budget horror hit Obsession has already broken that trend this May, becoming the first movie since 1982 to actually rise week over week two times in a row. In fact, Obsession is projected to take No. 2 at the domestic box office this weekend over Scary Movie at No 3, even though it's in its fifth frame as opposed to its second.

One reason for this drop could be the fact that Scary Movie reviews have been downright dismal. Critics gave the movie a score of just 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. While general audience members are enjoying it more, giving it a 67% on the platform's Popcornmeter, it only has a CinemaScore of C+, and it does not seem to be building any significant word of mouth. Regardless, it has already grossed more than $100 million worldwide against a reported budget of just $30 million, so it has already most likely cleared its break-even point.
