Throughout Paradise season 2, theories about who Alex really was were consistent, leaving the show to answer its biggest question in the season finale. Overshadowing every other question that fans were looking for the answer to, Paradise season 2 made it clear that despite wanting to know what Alex was, viewers were going to need to wait for the show to reach a natural point to answer. Alex's name surfaced early in the season, but became a focal point of speculation that felt urgent. Coming into play with Annie (Shailene Woodley) and Link (Thomas Doherty), Alex was a true mystery.

While some viewers believed that Alex was a person hidden somewhere within Paradise's post-apocalyptic landscape on the surface, others speculated that the mystery surrounding Alex made it clear they weren't a person at all. As the season continued, time travel, alternate realities, and advanced AI all became theories that were thrown on the table. With clues to the true answer dropping as early as Paradise season 2 episode 3, speculation around Alex was at an all-time high when the season finally decided to answer viewers' questions. The show made it clear that Alex represented something far larger than one individual.

The mystery of Alex was eventually resolved, making it clear that despite speculation, viewers couldn't take matters fully into their own hands as the season rolled on. Despite providing answers about Alex during the show's intense season finale, Paradise posed even more questions with another season coming to resolve them.

Paradise Season 2 Flashbacks Confirm Alex Was Henry Miller's Wife Who Died From Huntington’s Disease

Early on in the season, Paradise season 2, episode 3's flashbacks see Sinatra hire Billy Pace to coerce Henry Miller, a professor and quantum scientist, to sell his company to her. If he doesn't cooperate, he's under orders to kill the scientist. While trying to convince him at a bar, Henry gets Billy to follow him home, having refused to sign his company over to Sinatra. At his house, it's discovered he's caring for his wife, Alex, who is dying of Huntington's Disease. After Billy kills Henry, it's revealed that his protégé and company co-owner was, in fact, Link.

However, since Henry's Alex is dead, it makes no sense for Link to want to kill her — unless she wasn't exactly the Alex he meant. Paradise season 2 continued the mystery of who or what Alex was, making it clear that there was far more than met the eye about its biggest twist to date.

Paradise Season 2's Ending Confirmed Alex Is An AI-Powered Computer System

As Paradise season 2 moved ahead, the show's biggest mystery became less about the bunker or the surface, and more about Alex. Deliberately treating Alex as an unknown entity, the series created a huge sense of suspense surrounding what Alex was, how it would impact the characters, and what it would do to move the show forward. By the time the finale arrived, Paradise season 2 had made it clear that advancing technology was one of the biggest threads the show was pulling on. Theories surrounding Alex went this route, and the Paradise season 2 finale confirmed viewers' long-time suspicions.

As revealed during Paradise season 2's finale, Alex is an AI-powered quantum supercomputer created by Link alongside Professor Henry Miller years prior to the apocalypse. Named after Henry's wife, flashbacks revealed how Sinatra (Julianne Nicholson) got control of Alex, and make it clear that the supercomputer is far more than a traditional AI system. The computer's abilities were alarming, even to its creators, and despite warnings about its functionality, Sinatra ignored them as she viewed Alex as a solution to the growing climate crisis. Looking back to the season's strangest moments, the finale confirmed Alex was connected to temporal disruptions.

What Sinatra Was Using Alex For

Sinatra's relationship with Alex explains a lot of her more concerning behavior throughout the season, which viewers were struggling with despite having learned about her backstory. Sinatra consistently treated Alex as an opportunity, rather than worrying about its capabilities as an unknown. While the rest of the characters were on edge about what Alex could do, Sinatra felt that Alex was the answer to humanity's problems. In flashbacks, viewers saw that Sinatra funded Alex's development as an answer to the impending catastrophe. Even when Miller was worried about how powerful Alex could be, Sinatra stayed steadfast about benefits outweighing risks.

It was eventually revealed, however, that Sinatra's use of Alex had expanded significantly as the state of their world changed. Sinatra was convinced that Alex could do more than predict outcomes, believing the machine could influence reality. Sinatra felt that there was some connection between Alex and her son, which left her devoting an enormous amount of resources to expanding Alex's capabilities. Using Alex as humanity's chance to reverse or overcome the apocalypse, Sinatra felt the machine was a path forward. Framing her as someone who was willing to gamble everything on technology, Sinatra's behavior took precious resources from everyone.

Where Alex Is Now & How It Sets Up Paradise Season 3

Paradise season 2 answered questions surrounding Alex, but its future is one of the show's biggest mysteries to solve heading into its third, and presumably final, season. Paradise season 2's finale is the beginning of a much larger story about Alex, and the reveal of details surrounding what Alex is are likely only the beginning. The most important development about Alex was its location, revealing another bunker to Xavier (Sterling K. Brown). Alex, which is housed in another secret bunker beneath the Denver International Airport, is going to propel Xavier into the next, and hopefully final, phase of his journey.

Before her apparent death, Sinatra reveals to Xavier that the Denver facility holds Alex, another AI system that may hold the key to humanity's future. The finale also reveals that Xavier's connection to Alex is likely far deeper than viewers originally anticipated. Xavier is identified as User X, which appears critical to Alex's future activation. While Xavier doesn't know what's coming, his interactions with Alex may be what make or break his future. With Alex's mystery finally resolved, Paradise season 3 seems set up to explore whether or not it can alter history, create new timelines, or reverse the apocalypse.
