Twenty-six years since Gladiator, Russell Crowe is back in armor to fight off the Romans in a new epic movie.

Deadline reported that The Last Druid is finally moving forward, with three new cast members announced. Crowe will reunite with Nuremberg co-star Andreas Pietschmann, who has also starred in series like Dark and 1899. In addition, Rose Leslie, known for portraying Ygritte in Game of Thrones, also joins the cast alongside Daniel Zovatto. However, their roles were not disclosed in the report.

Meanwhile, it's revealed that filming will begin on June 8 in Barcelona and the Canary Islands, Spain. William Eubank will direct the movie, with the script penned by him, Phil Gawthorne, and Carlyle Eubank.

According to plot details, Crowe portrays a peaceful Celtic elder who must gear up to protect his family after an emperor discovers a secluded Druid haven in the Caledonian mountains. Given the premise's similarities to Gladiator, the project ignited great interest with international presales, which Amazon Studios inked a seven-figure deal in areas like the UK and Ireland, Australia/New Zealand, and Canada.

The project was first announced in October 2024, when Crowe's casting was confirmed. However, based on the report, the movie was supposed to have been filmed sometime last year. Nevertheless, at the time, AGC executive Stuart Ford celebrated the upcoming project: "This one was exceptionally well received by the international distributors who were fired up at the idea of Russell in this role and responded enthusiastically to the screenplay’s skillful marriage of action and heart.

Although the reason for the filming delay wasn't explained, Crowe himself has been busy with many projects in the last two years, including The Weight, Bear Country, and Billion Dollar Spy. Currently, the Oscar-winning actor is filming the upcoming reboot of Highlander, starring Man of Steel co-star Henry Cavill.

Crowe will portray Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, whom Sean Connery previously played in the original movies. The upcoming movie will actually mark his long-time reunion with Gladiator co-star Djimon Hounsou.

Since filming will start in less than a month, more details are expected to drop, including additional stars and a potential release window. The Last Druid currently has no release date.
