One of the biggest talking points after Resident Evil Requiem blew fans away with its record-breaking release is when we'd have another excuse to hop back into the ruins of Racoon City, which has finally arrived thanks to a surprise release from Capcom. While the studio had previously teased its upcoming DLC by saying it would release sometime after Golden Week, the shadow drop was even more sudden than we could have expected.
While the series has no shortage of additional modes, DLC, and replayable content to pull from, Resident Evil Requiem's latest free download, which was announced on Resident Evil's official X account mere hours ago, is something we've never quite seen before, while still remaining somewhat familiar for fans of the series.
Living up to the brutal promises of a replayable combat minigame teased by Capcom, Leon Must Die Forever is a brand new game mode that sees the fan-favorite protagonist facing off against some of Requiem's deadliest threats once more, with new challenges and adjustments thrown into the mix to spice up the experience.
To access the free Leon Must Die Forever DLC, you'll need to have first completed the main story of Resident Evil Requiem at least once.
Incorporating roguelike mechanics into the mix, the timed game mode sees Leon progressing through set levels from the main story with increasing difficulties under a strict time limit, before using your various upgrade purchases towards taking out a final boss standing between you and a shiny high score.
While Requiem's addition of Leon Must Die is far from the series' first combat-focused minigame, the roguelike mechanics, superpowered enhancements, and unique cosmetic rewards help set it apart from the previous iterations in the series.
Paying homage to Resident Evil 7's Ethan Must Die, which offered a somewhat similar outlandish survival horror experience of traversing its reorganized house and randomly generated item spawns, Leon Must Die takes full advantage of Resident Evil Requiem and its brutally stylish combat mechanics that offer a similar experience to the series' ever-popular randomizer mods.
Leon Must Die Forever's naming inspiration goes even further back to Capcom's Devil May Cry series and its ultimate Dante Must Die difficulty mode.
Leon's already unique wardrobe is also getting even more fabulous in the latest update, with costumes ranging from the expanded return of his cat ears from Resident Evil 4 to a replica of his Porsche as a hat.
Even if it's not the beloved return of Mercenaries that some fans were hoping for, Leon Must Die is still an excellent content addition that blows Requiem's previous updates out of the water, with five extensive difficulty options offering plenty of replayability to tie you over until the release of Resident Evil Requiem's upcoming story DLC.
