Capcom is riding pretty high right now, as far as the Resident Evil series is concerned. They have a hit new mainline entry starring arguably the most beloved long-term hero, and successfully introduced a newcomer, Grace. Fans are already looking forward to seeing what the future holds for both protagonists.

But for now, it might be time to go back to the past. Based on a leak from famed Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem, discussed on Reddit, we could be getting another remake of the original Resident Evil. Is it time to visit the Spencer mansion yet again?

Resident Evil 1 Is Being Remade... Again

For Some Fans, It's Time

The two main characters in Resident Evil Remake Capcom

According to all the leaks, this is where we currently stand with the Resident Evil series, after the inevitable Resident Evil Requiem DLC:

  • Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake - 2027
  • Resident Evil 0 remake - 2028
  • Resident Evil 10 - 2029
  • Resident Evil 1 Remake - TBA

That last entry really stands out from the rest, especially since the original came out in 1996 and the remake in 2002. That's right, we got one of the most impactful remakes ever made over two decades ago. This brings up the age-old question: should you remake a remake? One fan chimes in to posit that you can, after all this time: "I don't know why people think RE1 HD can't be remade? The game got remade in 2002, that's 24 years ago."

Other fans are absolutely floored at the idea, especially if they are within the newish remake universe Capcom set up for Resident Evil 2's return: "Man I love what Capcom is doing. This is one of the few instances where an entire series being remade is a great thing. I didn’t have the consoles to play early games and as I got older, I simply could not go back to the fixed camera games. First RE I played was 4. And I’m loving the remakes I’ve played this far, with RE4R arguably being my favorite game of all time. Haven’t finished Requiem yet but it’s phenomenal so far. I want them to remake everything Resident Evil."

To that end, a lot of fans think it should just stay as it is: "I heard you like remakes. So we’re remaking remakes." Another fan has a theory: "Latest rumors I saw was that Capcom will have a 'state of the franchise' meeting sometime next year where they make decisions on what projects to greenlight next. Presumably RE5R will come up during that. Which means work isn’t underway yet. At this point I fully expect every pre-RE7 mainline game to get a remake though."

The 2002 Remake Remains A High Point For The Series

It's Tough To Beat, Remake-Wise

I still replay the 2002 Resident Evil remake to this day, and aside from a few control snags some people might have, it holds up really well. The core of the original is still present, and there are a lot of interesting changes to the Spencer Mansion that ensure multiple playthroughs will still feel fresh.

That said, I'd go for another remake. It's been decades, and the Resident Evil series is a lot older than most people think. If it could finally connect everything to the new remake universe, it may shore up a few pieces of connective tissue for Resident Evil games going forward.
