James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, for many fans of the franchise, is still the best game it has ever produced. Though the N64 version has certainly aged over the years, the balance between fun level design, enthralling story, and clever mechanics defined everything that the series is, and would be, for decades to come.
Since its original release, Nintendo has released other versions of the game for later consoles, and it's those that are likely to get more active play from players these days. At the same time, PC emulation has made it much easier for fans to play at home, but just make sure you own a legit copy before taking that approach.
The elephant in the room is that, between the Switch and Switch 2, a new version of Ocarina of Time hasn't seen the light of day. So could that be happening, and is it something that people really want or need?
Is Ocarina Of Time 3DS Coming To Switch 2?
Over on the NeoGAF forums, a player shared a rumor from an "insider," claiming that Nintendo is preparing a Switch and Switch 2 port of the 3DS version released in 2011. Rather than anything too ambitious, it would be a relatively simple Full-HD remaster, scheduled for release in the Winter of this year.
It's a cool idea, and quite an exciting one if you're new to Nintendo games with the arrival of the Switch. That said, there were plenty who think that the developer isn't really going far enough to bring the game into the modern day.
"At this point, a simple remaster of the 3DS port would not cut it. Just remake it with modern assets and QOL changes," one comment read.
Another felt differently, saying, "I'd take an OoT/MM double pack. They don't need a remake, the games are fine as is with some smaller improvements."
Zelda's 40th Anniversary Demands Celebration
NintendoIn a happy coincidence, 2026 is a massive year for Nintendo-focused properties, with Pokémon celebrating its 30th anniversary at the same time that Zelda is celebrating its 40th. With some big announcements for the former, including confirmation of the arrival of Generation 10, Zelda is more than worthy of something equally monumental.
What Nintendo has planned is unclear right now, but the announcement of a new game for the franchise, alongside fresh versions of Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask, would be more than enough to mark the occasion in the way the franchise deserves.
