Remarkably Bright Creatures is the latest streaming movie with a powerful and emotional ending worth looking at in detail. One of the best May 2026 Netflix releases, Remarkably Bright Creatures centers around the relationship between Tova, the cleaning woman at an aquarium, and Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus voiced by Alfred Molina, who lives in the tanks.

The cast of Remarkably Bright Creatures is one of the film's many great features. Led by Sally Field as Tova Sullivan, the movie also features a strong supporting performance by Lewis Pullman, who takes over Tova's job at the aquarium after she sustains an injury. This leads the two into an unusual relationship that winds up taking some surprising turns.

In the end, reviews for Remarkably Bright Creatures have highlighted the film's warm and sweet tone. Featuring emotional relationships between complex characters, the film, based on the novel by Shelby Van Pelt, culminates in one of the warmest and most comforting stories that the streamer has told in years.

With a blend of sweet tones and a beautiful landscape against which the film is set, with cozy small-town vibes and delicate kindness between characters, Remarkably Bright Creatures is a genuinely sweet and enjoyable watch. However, it's the film's powerful developments in its ending that elevate it to being one of the best movies of 2026 so far, despite a handful of changes to the Remarkably Bright Creatures book.

Cameron's Father's Identity Explained

The end of Remarkably Bright Creatures reveals that the ring Cameron carried, engraved with the word EELS, actually held the initials of Erik Ernest Lindgren Sullivan, Tova's son. During the film's conclusion, this ring unites her and Cameron, fulfilling both of their respective research and revealing that Cameron is actually Tova's grandson.

Cameron spent most of the film believing that Simon Brinks was his father, but a meeting with the wealthy developer reveals that things are more complicated: Simon is gay, and was only a dear friend of Daphne, Cameron's mother.

Erik had to be secretive about his relationship with Daphne. Both Simon and Daphne's parents were strict and bigoted, and their pretending to be together helped to cover up Simon's sexual identity. The pressures of this on Erik, and the pregnancy that ensued, led to his confusing behavior just before his death.

Marcellus helps to unveil this. After discovering Simon is not his father, Cameron throws his ring into the wolf eel cage. In a move of quiet resolution, Marcellus storms the cage to retrieve the ring before heading to the door. Tova sets him free, and he leaves the ring behind.

What Cameron's Father Reveal Means For Tova

There is a part of Tova that feels very lonely at the beginning of Remarkably Bright Creatures. Despite having a great number of friends, she struggles to open up to them. She doesn't share her struggles or her feelings, and even hides the conversation about selling her house and moving to a retirement home.

With Cameron, things are immediately different, although Tova is still reluctant. The two quickly fall into sync, and develop a sweet friendship, but it is with the reveal of Cameron being Tova's grandson that she finally feels that she is able to lean on him.

Rather than moving into assisted living, Tova stays in Sowell Bay. She asserts her own independence in this, but also the importance of her community. She replaces Ethan's shirt, and she moves on with a greater understanding of herself as well as her son before his tragic ending in a boating accident.

This helps tremendously: the reveal of Cameron being Erik's son, and the box of items she finds beneath her floorboards, help Tova to recognize Erik's death was an accident, not a suicide. It is a tragedy, certainly, but understanding her son's own hopes for the future, and how they have manifested in Cameron, makes the memory a little easier.

What Happens To Marcellus

The film makes it clear that Marcellus is near the end of his life, which has led to his escape attempts. Giant Pacific octopuses have a relatively short lifespan of only between three and five years. Dictated by his counting of days, Marcellus is already squarely between these figures and is headed toward his death.

The people and the aquarium have settled into moving on, and a new octopus has already been adopted to eventually take Marcellus' place. This is hard for Tova to accept, but it also allows her the opportunity to say goodbye to her dear friend. When Marcellus stands at the door, overlooking the water, she decides to release him.

Marcellus is placed into the ocean, where he is able to live out the rest of his days in peace, in a vast and open natural habitat. It will only be a matter of time before he passes, but it is a comfort that he has been given the opportunity for some life where he belongs.

This sets up the ending of Remarkably Bright Creatures, and the themes it presents. Life is complex, and connections between people and animals alike are multifaceted. Eventually, things must be let go of. and that's ultimately the human message of Remarkably Bright Creatures.
