Mere hours after it was announced that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson would play Thor in Prime Video’s God of War series, the show has also cast his father. News broke this afternoon that Mandy Patinkin will take over the role of Odin in the live-action God of War show. This comes as a shock to many fans who were expecting to see Richard Schiff reprise his role from God of War: Ragnarok. Patinkin is best known for his role as Saul in Homeland and also for winning an Emmy for his performance in the CBS medical drama, Chicago Hope. He’s a current regular on Brilliant Minds.
The cast for Prime Video’s God of War series is coming along nicely, especially after it was announced that Ryan Hurst would play the titular role as Kratos in the show. Hurst has familiarity with the series too, thanks to his time playing Thor in God of War: Ragnarok. Max Parker has also been cast as Heimdall in Prime Video’s God of War show, and Teresa Palmer will play Sif. It’s unclear at this time when the show will begin production, but with the cast filling out by the day, the start of filming is likely to come soon.
Ronald D. Moore, best known for his work on the hit Apple TV sci-fi series For All Mankind, is the lead writer on Prime Video’s God of War series. Emmy-winning Shōgun director Frederick E.O. Toye has been tapped to direct the show, which has yet to cast one of its most critical roles, Atreus. Atreus is the son of Kratos, who is with him on every step of his journey, and he will be as much of a series regular as Ryan Hurst or any member of the Norse royal family.
What Is ‘God of War’ About?
The total God of War story follows Kratos, a Spartan who strikes a deal with the God of War, Ares, before ultimately overthrowing him and taking down the entire Greek pantheon over several games. At the start of God of War (2018), Kratos has left behind his old life of vengeance and vows to find a better path as he sets out for the highest peak in the realm to spread his wife’s ashes with his son, Atreus. The God of War series will have some work to do, skipping the entire Greek saga and diving right into the Norse storyline.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the God of War series.
