Sci-fi anthologies are growing increasingly popular, and Prime Video's Secret Level is an underrated addition to the genre. There are 15 episodes in Secret Level, each telling a standalone story. Anthology TV shows can struggle to keep viewers invested when each episode is different, but Secret Level is compelling throughout, making it one of the best TV anthologies with perfect episodes.
Secret Level had a running start as it references so many video games, automatically gaining the attention of their fandoms. However, the show also has a very high production value, excellent animation, and one of the best A-list voice casts in an animated TV show. Secret Level features Arnold Schwarzenegger, Keanu Reeves, and Emily Swallow, among many other major stars.
What Is Secret Level About?
Each episode in Secret Level tells a self-contained short story that is set in the world of a different video game franchise, including Warhammer, Dungeons & Dragons, and even Pac-Man. Secret Level shares many features with Love, Death + Robots, Netflix's sci-fi anthology masterpiece, including a writer and several members of the creative team. However, the two shows are not connected.
Secret Level is less disturbing than Love, Death + Robots, with many episodes ending on a hopeful note and leaning more into the fantasy genre rather than sci-fi. The show's standout episode is "New World: The Once And Future King," which stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and tells the story of an arrogant king who fails to conquer a land, ending with a message about second chances.
You Can Binge Secret Level In Less Than 4 Hours
Episodes of Secret Level can vary in length, but all are extremely short, with most lasting between 10 and 18 minutes. This compact runtime means that the entire series can be enjoyed if spaced out over a few days, or binged in one go in less than four hours. While short and excellent fantasy TV shows are rare, Secret Level is one.
There are some epic sci-fi masterpieces available to watch, but one of the best things about short anthology series is the creativity that they offer. Secret Level is a fascinating idea in which every story is original, though inspired by existing source material. The show also works well on a rewatch, as viewers can revisit their favorite games and episodes.
Which Games Should Be In Secret Level Season 2
It was announced in 2024 that Secret Level has been renewed for Season 2. While we do not yet know which video games will be featured in the show's next season, there are several strong contenders. Shows that already have fan-favorite characters and a distinctive look are likely to attract a wide audience, though the writers may avoid existing adaptations like Fallout.
Valorant could be exciting if it avoids being overshadowed by Arcane, while Ghost of Tsushima could be a possibility after a key character had a cameo in Secret Level's first season. After the show turned Pac-Man into a gory horror story, it could be very interesting to see what Secret Level could do with another old-school arcade classic like Tetris.
