It is hard to believe that it was 30 years ago that we were first treated to the first ever installment of Pokémon. However, it is indeed true as 2026 celebrates the 30th anniversary of the beloved Nintendo franchise and, to celebrate, fans are getting their hands on some incredible Pokémon entries that have flown under the radar in recent years. They made not be official entries, such as the upcoming Pokémon Winds and Waves, but they are the next best thing, allowing fans to experience some of their favorite Pokémon entries but with heaps of new and exciting content.

That is the case for Pokémon Fire Ash, an extensive and fan-made ROM hack complete in the style of 1996's Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Created by Reinhartmax over on Poke Community, Pokémon Fire Ash was made using RPGMaker XP and Pokémon Essentialsv19 and loosely follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum. Although this ROM hack was first released back in 2017, it is still regarded as one of the best ways to experience Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen in modern times, especially as it features an expansive Pokédex featuring over 900 Pokémon up to Gen 8.

However, that is not all, as veteran Pokémon fans will be pleased to learn that Pokémon Fire Ash will see you journey across eight regions, including: Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, and the Orange Islands, with some of these iconic locations not having been seen in an official Pokémon title for over a decade. It is across these regions that fans will be able to take part in over 50 gym battles as Ash will go head-to-head with both his traveling companions and rivals. Featuring abilities and movesets taken from the early generations, players can also expect to see Mega Evolution, Alola Forms, Z-Moves, Dynamax, and Ash-Greninja. Perhaps most exciting, at least for me, is that Pikachu will follow you on your journey!

Town event in FireRed Rocket Edition

In Pokémon Fire Ash, the world is your oyster as you experience graphics inspired by Gen 3, and even stumble across items which you may recognize from Gen 1 to Gen 8. Last but not least, this impressive ROM hack will allow you to access a warping system located at Pokémon centers, as opposed to flying, and it also includes the Battle Frontier adventure. Overall, this is a large and incredibly impressive ROM hack that aims to transform Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen into a modern-day remake we have all been waiting for. So, if you are eager to dive into another Pokémon adventure ahead of the launch of 2027's Pokémon Winds and Waves, make sure to check out Pokémon Fire Ash now.
