 Definitive Edition

PlayStation 5 users looking to enjoy a timeless real-time strategy game will be pleased to learn that an all-time classic could be making its way to the console. When it comes to the RTS genre, PC has historically been the preferred format since it allows for more robust control schemes and UI elements that work better with a mouse and keyboard. Fortunately for console players, developers have come up with some handy design tricks to make RTS games possible with a controller, opening up Xbox and PlayStation to a whole new world of games.

Posting to Reddit, user Fidler_2K shared a leaked image of PlayStation Network users seemingly logging into Age of Empire 2: Definitive Edition.

As far as the official release is concerned, the PlayStation logo isn't known to feature on the Teams page, suggesting that developers World's Edge and Forgotten Empires are working on a PlayStation port. While the leak does seem accurate and it does corroborate recent rumors, it's still worth taking it with a pinch of salt until an official announcement is made.

Age Of Empires 2 On PlayStation Would Be Great

Although Some Xbox Players May Not Be Pleased

The Age of Empire brand has long been associated with Microsoft given its roots as a PC series but there's no reason it couldn't flourish on PlayStation. With the benefit of crossplay, it could introduce a whole new audience to the multiplayer scene and help usher in a group of players eager to learn more about the storied real-time strategy series. In fact, the original Age of Empires II was ported to the PlayStation 2 back in 2001 but this version of the game was distinctly harder to control, resulting in it being largely forgotten.

The PlayStation community may be excited for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition but the port would be yet another Xbox console exclusive to make the multiplatform transition. Xbox's decision to bring over some of its most popular games to PlayStation and Nintendo Switch has proven to be a controversial move as many fans see it as the brand diluting itself. If Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is the next step in Microsoft's plan, the Xbox community could become even more frustrated.

Everyone Should Try Age Of Empires 2

It's A Classic For A Reason

While I missed the heyday of Age of Empires 2 (I played far more Age of Empires 3), I have checked out the Definitive Edition: It's a remarkable remaster for a game that's aged very well. I'm not a massive fan of playing RTS games with a controller but I'll be glad that PlayStation fans have a chance to understand the hype themselves. There's a reason Age of Empires II is still held up as one of the best strategy games ever made.
