Paul Thomas Anderson took home his second Oscar of the night and first as a director landing the Academy Award for Best Directing on Sunday night. In his speech, he joked about how long it took and also gave tribute to his assistant director Adam Somner, who passed away last year.

“I share this with Adam Somner,” Anderson said. “I know he is in a really big bar having a gin and tonic to celebrate this win.”

It marked the fourth time he has been feted this award season having previously taken home the prize at the Golden Globes, BAFTAs and Directors Guild . The other nominees in the category included Chloe Zhao for Hamnet, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value and Ryan Coogler for Sinners.

Anderson joked how “you make a guy work for one of these” after winning following his 14th nomination. Anderson would go on to praise his fellow classmates that were nominated and said he couldn’t ask for a better class.

“I’m here for those that gave their faith and their time, which is the best part of being on a film crew.”

The win marked the fifth win of the night for One Battle After Another after previously winning best casting, supporting actor, editing and adapted screenplay.
