Although Mayor of Kingstown is one of Taylor Sheridan’s most popular shows, the crime drama’s surprise cancellation just became even worse thanks to Netflix. Mayor of Kingstown arrives on Netflix soon, which should be great news for fans of the Jeremy Renner series. Indeed, anyone hoping to revisit the show will be in luck.
However, in the context of creator Taylor Sheridan’s larger TV empire, Mayor Of Kingstown’s Netflix arrival is bittersweet news. Thanks to the Yellowstone franchise, Sheridan is one of the few TV showrunners who are household names in terms of fame. However, his reign as the king of the small screen may be coming to an end.
Mayor Of Kingstown Will Become Even More Popular On Netflix
Sheridan’s Mayor of Kingstown ends with its upcoming season 5, and, to add insult to injury for fans of the series, its final outing will be a shorter, truncated eight-episode season. Although Mayor of Kingstown’s early reviews were rough, the show’s fourth season enjoyed its best critical reception yet.
Mayor of Kingstown follows Jeremy Renner’s antihero Mike McLusky, a tough, battle-hardened former inmate and current mediator between the city’s gangs. Running the city’s prison business while keeping things steady among its many criminal elements, McLusky isn’t above using force to maintain an uneasy peace. He’s also always watching his own back in an inherently duplicitous business.
Mayor Of Kingstown's Creator Had Plans For At Least 7 Seasons
Image courtesy of Everett CollectionAlthough Yellowstone and its first spinoff, 1923, both wrapped up per Sheridan’s original plans, Mayor Of Kingstown was not so lucky. The showrunner said he had an ambitious seven-season plan for the crime show, but its unexpected cancellation means that these stories will now need to be crammed into the final eight episodes of season 5.
Since Landman season 2’s biggest failure was stretching out its sparse story, it might not be a bad thing for Mayor of Kingstown to wrap up quickly. However, most shows that are forced to conclude their stories without sufficient screen time end up offering viewers a profoundly dissatisfying ending. Luckily, the show’s arrival on Netflix offers a glimmer of hope.
Could Netflix Save Mayor Of Kingstown?
That said, this very hope could make matters worse in the long run. Moving to Netflix could save Taylor Sheridan’s canceled crime series, but this is not very likely. Technically, Netflix can renew Mayor of Kingstown if the show proves a huge hit on the streaming service, and a sixth season would expand Taylor Sheridan’s TV empire.
Since his historic Paramount deal ends soon, Sheridan shows like Mayor of Kingstown could soon be revived elsewhere. However, fans of the series should not hold their breath. It is rare for a drama show to be revived so late into its run, meaning Mayor of Kingstown season 5 will likely be its final outing.
