Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Paradise season 2, episode 5, "The Mailman."Ever since Paradise first premiered, fans have been desperate to know what actually happened to the Earth, which was finally explained towards the end of season 1. The reveal left plenty of mysteries unsolved, but season 2 has expanded on these catastrophic events by hinting that the worst is still to come, yet one small detail suggests the survivors still have hope.
Despite not having to deal with mutated creatures or the dead coming back to life, Paradise's apocalypse feels as scary as Fallout and The Last of Us, based on what's on the horizon. Years before a supervolcanic eruption caused the show’s unprecedented tsunami, a man named Dr. Louge predicted this horrifying fate, as well as the dramatic temperature drop.
Worryingly, he explained that this was just phase one, and that phase two would make any survivors wish they'd died on the very first day. This terrifying theory has been building up to Earth's demise throughout season 2, but luckily, Paradise's latest flashback trick dropped a small clue that things may not actually pan out as Louge expected.
Paradise Season 2 Just Confirmed Dr. Louge’s Prediction May Not Be As Accurate As We First Thought
Having successfully anticipated the disaster that changed the world in Paradise, it seemed safe to presume that Dr. Louge's hunch about what would happen next to the Earth was destined to become reality. He theorized that it would take around three to five years for the planet to become habitable outside, and even then, a greater disaster lay ahead.
After things stabilized, Louge claimed that trapped greenhouse gases would seize control and raise the temperature dramatically, evaporating oceans and eventually causing the Earth to be crushed. With Sinatra preparing for a solution to this next phase, it's clear Paradise wants its viewers to believe this will be an unavoidable future, but there's evidence to suggest this isn't the case.
While Louge was right about Earth's initial fate, his calculations regarding when the cooling would stop are inaccurate, based on the details the show has provided. The doomsday prophet indicated it would take a minimum of three years for this to happen, but Annie's survival story in Paradise season 2's premiere already disproved this.
"Graceland" followed her life from the very first day of the apocalypse, and she was able to comfortably step outside on day 689, which is way ahead of schedule. While the timeline updates stopped here, birds could be heard singing, indicating this is the point where the cold weather stopped, and normal life started to resume.
Of course, this doesn't guarantee the next stage of Louge's theory still can't come true, but it's the first clue that he wasn't 100% right about everything. Being over a year out about such a significant detail feels like a major error for someone so assured, meaning there is a real chance the world isn't completely doomed in Paradise.
If The Worst Has Already Passed, It Completely Changes Paradise Season 2
Although most of the show's survivors aren't aware of Dr. Louge's prediction, a big part of the show still stems around this so-called second phase. Therefore, if he was wrong and the world has already endured the worst of this natural disaster, the entire series will have a completely different feel, especially when it comes to the bunker.
There are still a lot of questions regarding what Sinatra's Project Alex actually is in Paradise season 2, but whatever she is planning seems to be in preparation for Earth's next challenge. She had an innocent man killed just to get her hands on some crucial technology well before the apocalypse started, showing how convinced she is that Louge's theory is correct.
It also explains her ruthless behavior within the bunker, as she has ordered people's deaths just to protect her secret. What her project is capable of remains unknown to the audience, but Link appears to understand how dangerous it is and plans on infiltrating the bunker, suggesting a violent battle could ensue as the pair battle over this tech.
As a result, both characters may end up fighting for what they think is the best chance at saving the world from a fate that may not even happen. Sadly, this could come at the expense of many innocent lives, proving how impactful Louge's potentially false assumption could be on Paradise's story going forward.
It likely won't change much regarding Xavier and Teri's story, but if they were to return and find out one of their children died in this needless power struggle, it could have a domino effect.
Rather than everyone being able to rebuild after the worst of the apocalypse has passed, there's a high chance it would only lead to more hostility and division due to fears of what could still happen, and with some fans believing Sinatra's plan involves time travel, there is no telling what chaos may arise.
Dr. Louge’s Timeline Error Could Still Be A Bad Thing For Paradise’s Survivors
On paper, Dr. Louge being wrong about Paradise's timeline sounds like it could be a good thing, since the rest of his theory could be a dud. However, there's also the possibility that everything is simply happening much faster than he expected, meaning phase two may actually be approaching way before Sinatra can prepare for it, which could spell disaster.
Given temperatures started to stabilize less than two years after the tsunami hit, it's not unreasonable to assume that this drastic increase is just around the corner, since another year or so has passed. Therefore, if Louge's terrifying event does come to fruition, the survivors may not have long left until they're facing an unstoppable danger.
Unfortunately, this leaves little hope for Paradise season 2's cast unless either Sinatra or Link can find a way to use this secret piece of technology to prevent such a catastrophe. It's unclear if an event like this can even be avoided at this point, but the series may lean into some sci-fi elements to provide an answer.
Hopefully, Dr. Louge is simply wrong about Earth suffering the same fate as Venus, since it would almost certainly mark the end of the world as we know it in Paradise. However, if he is right, the stakes will be higher than ever as this dreaded day gets closer, setting up a thrilling yet eerie future for Hulu's thriller.
