An Oscars 2026 Tie? Breaking Down the Rare Win in the Best Live Action Short Film Category

One piece of history after another was made at the 2026 Oscars

This year’s March 15 Academy Awards were filled with historic wins during the Conan O’Brien-hosted ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, solidifying the award show as one that will be remembered for years to come. (See all the winners here.)

Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley made history as the first Irish actress to win Best Actress in a Leading Role, while WeaponsAmy Madigan broke the record for longest gap between her first nomination—Twice in a Lifetime in 1986—and first win this year for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

In a historic first, SinnersAutumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman and Black cinematographer to win the award for Best Cinematography.

Meanwhile, KPop Demon Hunter’s “Golden” was officially the first Kpop song to win Best Original Song and Sentimental Value marked Norway’s first win in the Best International Film category.

Even though he wasn’t present to pick up the award, One Battle After Another’s Sean Penn became only the fourth male actor to earn three acting Oscars with his win for Best Actor in a Supporting Role, joining fellow three-time recipients Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson and Walter Brennan.

And Oscar watchers are likely to not forget The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva tying for Best Live Action Short Film, marking only the seventh time in the Oscars history there had been a tie.

The ceremony also marked the first ever Best Casting Oscar, which was awarded to Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another. And the longtime casting director was extremely grateful that she and her colleagues were finally being recognized.

“I have to obviously thank the Academy for even adding this category and for the casting directors that fought tirelessly to make it happen—despite everything in their way,” she shared during her acceptance speech. “I dedicate this to you and to the casting directors who never got a chance to get up here, who didn't even get a chance to get their name on the movie.”

But even before the awards were handed out, history had already been made when the nominees were announced Jan. 21 with Sinners picking up 16 nominations, making it the most-nominated film in Academy Awards history.

And that wasn’t the only milestone Sinners achieved as the vampire picture’s costume designer Ruth E. Carter—already a two-time winner—also became the most-nominated Black woman in Oscars history with five nominations.

As for Timothée Chalamet, despite losing to Michael B. Jordan the Marty Supreme actor had nabbed his third nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role—as well as one for Best Picture as a producer—making him the youngest person to achieve the feat since Marlon Brando in 1954.

And it was certainly a historic moment for Steven Spielberg as the director—who has won three Oscars to date—set the record for most nominations in the Best Picture category for his work as a producer on Hamnet. (He’s picked up 14 producing nominations and an overall 24 nominations across his six decades long career.)
