WARNING: This article includes major spoilers from The Boys season 5, episode 1.The Boys universe just lost one of its major characters, as the final season is underway.
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley, A-Train actor Jessie T. Usher broke down The Boys season 5 premiere, as his character became the first massive casualty at the hands of Homelander. The star, who has been with the series since its inception, shared how shooting his death scene "was incredible," calling Antony Starr "the best scene partner. One of my favorite scene partners that I've had on this entire series, and we got a chance to really play around in that moment and fulfill all of the wants and the needs and the desires of the character and the dynamic that these two have built and grown alongside each other. And then we finally got a chance to break it down and have something visceral and real and honest. And I wouldn't have gone out any other way."
Usher also reacted when he first read the moment where A-Train swerved out of the way, making it a full circle moment. The actor explained how he "applauded" reading it. To him, "It's not often that a character's end is poetic in that way. I was just happy that A-Train makes a decision in that moment. He processes all of this. And it happens in such a quick amount of time, but when we shot it, we really tried to slow it down as much as we can to show that he's processing what's happening on his face."
According to Usher, "He's approaching this girl and he is like, 'I could just blow through this chick and keep running or not make the same mistake again.' And he makes a decision that he knows he's going to pay for to not do the same thing and not let history repeat itself, even if it's going to cost him his life. But it's in that moment that he sort of wakes up and realizes like, 'Ah, this has all been ridiculous anyways, and I don't want to continue down this path. So I'm going to miss her and then face Homelander and whatever comes of that comes of that.'"
Following the events of The Boys season 5, things are only just getting started for the protagonists and their final war against Homelander. Eric Kripke and other cast members have been making it clear throughout the last year that no one is safe from getting axed in the final season.
Things that have yet to air include the big Supernatural reunion between Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Jared Padalecki that Kripke and the creative team are staging for season 5. Gen V characters will also be appearing throughout the swan-song season, following the setup in season 2 of the spinoff series. Time will tell who else will bite the dust by the time The Boys season 5 reaches its series finale, which is scheduled for May 20.
New episodes of The Boys season 5 premiere every Wednesday on Prime Video.
