WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ONE PIECE MANGA CHAPTER #1179

Both Elbaph and One Piece readers' expectations were shaken when the World Government's Supreme Ruler made their grand appearance on the Giant's homeland. Their entrance onto the battlefield may bring the largest threat that the Straw Hat crew has ever seen, but it could lead to even darker consequences that the Five Elders risked their lives to avoid.

In classic One Piece fashion, it did not take long for things to turn hectic after Luffy and his crew landed on Elbaph. But few thought it would escalate to the point where the World Government's secret ruler would arrive to personally confront the Straw Hat crew. Besides the obvious excitement of seeing arguably One Piece's ultimate villain clash against the series' main protagonist, Imu's arrival on Elbaph spells catastrophe for more reasons than fans realize.

The Cost Of Seeing Imu Is Too Great

Saint Nerona Imu, the Founder of the World Government, has kept their rule a secret from One Piece's world for over 800 years. Fans do not need to look far into the story's past to recall how far the figure has been willing to go in order to keep their secret. And mass murder is only one of the few horrific displays the mysterious dictator has proven to be capable of.

Previously in the Egghead arc, Luffy's brother Sabo was shown sneaking into the Imu's home, Pangaea Castle in Mary Geoise. There, he saw the brutal murder of Alabasta's good king by the hands of the transformed Five Elders and the demonic figure sitting on the symbolic Empty Throne. Witnessing such a truth nearly cost the revolutionary his life during a daring escape, but that transgression was soon paid with the lives of an entire kingdom.

The Greatest Threat To One Piece's Final Villain Isn't Luffy, It's Chopper (No Seriously)

The weakest Straw Hat has emerged as the most effective weapon against Imu's demonic forces, setting the stage for One Piece's final arc.

After receiving word that Sabo had likely fled to the island of Lulusia after his encounter with Imu, the World Government's Supreme Ruler ordered the complete erasure of the island, an act that saw thousands of innocent souls extinguished in seconds. Imu's drastic action was made in an attempt to keep their existence a secret from the Revolutionaries and the world at large. Now, he will likely attempt the same sort of cleanse with others who witness his true form, which includes everyone on Elbaph.

Imu Has Proven What They'll Do To Keep A Secret

Imu From One Piece

Chapter #1179's surprising face reveal of Imu delivered on one of One Piece's greatest mysteries, but the chapter's scene with the Five Elders was almost as dramatic. When Imu expressed their desire to leave the self-proclaimed Holy Land of Mary Geoise, some of the Elders questioned their leader's decision, which may have cost them their lives if Imu were in a less forgiving mood. But the Five Elders had plenty of good reasons to try to convince the world's ruler not to teleport to Elbaph.

There are still plenty of mysteries surrounding Saint Nerona Imu that One Piece will likely unveil, like the extent of damage their powers inflict on their physical body when overused. That tool is likely a big reason the Five Elders tried to stop Imu from traveling to Elbaph, but their previous hesitation to wipe out Lulusia also hints towards another issue they may have with Imu's decision.

From what author Eiichiro Oda has established, Imu could be preparing to kill everyone on Elbaph to keep their identity a secret. Imu disposing of the Straw Hat crew on Elbaph would only solve one of the World Government's problems, but if they were to kill all the Giants on Elbaph, it would potentially be a huge loss for the Government as well.

For years, Imu and the Elders have attempted to rein in the Giants and control their considerable might to become their own. With Imu showing themselves on Elbaph, there is a good chance the evil leader has thrown away that desire and is now prepared to wipe out the legendary race to accomplish their goal. Unless Luffy and his crew can do something about it in a battle that promises to set a chaotic stage for One Piece’s final arc.
