[Editor's note: The following contains spoilers through the Season 1 finale of Off Campus.]After making seven seasons of the CBBC series, Malory Towers, it’s already abundantly clear that Ella Bright is brimming with talent and experience, but Prime Video’s Off Campus is bound to send her star soaring in a significant way. Based on the hugely popular book series by Elle Kennedy, Off Campus Season 1 puts the spotlight on the main characters of the first novel, The Deal. Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) is Briar University’s impossibly popular star hockey player who can get just about any girl he wants. Bright’s Hannah Wells, on the other hand, is a quiet songwriter who tends to keep clear of the college party scene. Not a likely pair. Plus, Hannah has a crush on someone else.
When Garrett struggles with his philosophy class, he opts to turn to a top student for help, Hannah, and the two strike up a deal; she’ll help him with his classwork and he’ll help her get who she thinks is the guy of her dreams, Josh Heuston’s Justin. However, the longer they fake date in an effort to make Justin jealous, the more evident it becomes that they’re actually the perfect fit for one another. In the end, Garrett and Hannah fall for each other, and the viewer falls for them as a couple.
The trouble is, Season 2 of Off Campus is based on the second book of Kennedy’s series, and that book, The Mistake, has different main characters. Does that mean we’ll get a lot less Hannah and Garrett in Off Campus Season 2?
With Off Campus Season 1 now available to stream in full on Prime Video, Bright joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to revisit her journey to Off Campus, to dig into some of Hannah’s biggest scenes of the season, and to look ahead at the character's future on the series.
Ella Bright Promises It’s Only the Beginning for Hannah and Garrett in ‘Off Campus’
"The way that we end Season 1 is kind of, in a way, the beginning of their relationship."
The book Off Campus Season 1 is based on, The Deal, does have a bit of an ensemble feel, but given the entire story is told from Hannah and Garrett’s perspectives, they consume much of the spotlight. However, when adapting the book for the screen, show creator Louisa Levy and her team made a concerted effort to give the other characters bigger roles, and it’s something that will undoubtedly serve the series well going forward.
The second book and, in turn, the second season, will focus on Logan and Grace. India Fowler has yet to make her screen debut as Grace, but in Season 1, Antonio Cipriano makes a big impression as John Logan. Similarly, if the Prime Video series jumps to the third book next, that’s when Dean (Stephen Kalyn) and Allie (Mika Abdalla) take center stage. Whereas in The Deal, we only get hints at what’s brewing in their worlds, the Off Campus series bumped up significant material between the two so that when their season comes, there’s already an established connection with their characters.
Given all that, one can assume Levy & co. will give Hannah and Garrett the same treatment. Even though their book is done, they’ll still be heavily incorporated in the seasons to come. But, just to be safe, I checked in with Bright on this exact matter. Here’s what she said when asked if Hannah will continue to have a big role in Season 2:
“I think what is so great is there are so many fun ensemble moments, and you care about all of these characters so deeply. And yeah, no, Hannah and Garrett, honestly, the way that we end Season 1 is kind of, in a way, the beginning of their relationship. They've gone through this whole journey, and now they've really decided, they had the break-up and this is where they want to get back together. I think that will come with its own challenges, as it does. I haven't read the scripts yet, but I'm really excited to just see their journey as a full relationship where they love each other, but they’re also going through college, and they've got the different loves for things. It's gonna be an exciting journey, for sure."
What's Next for Hannah Wells?
Bright has some ideas for Off Campus Season 2.
Image via Prime VideoBright hasn’t seen scripts for Off Campus Season 2 just yet, but she does have her own ideas about how the show could deepen Hannah’s journey, particularly as a singer-songwriter. Throughout much of Season 1, Hannah struggled with writer’s block. Going into Season 2, however, that power is unlocked and ready to be honed. Bright explained:
“I think how she utilizes that in work, because she got an internship at the end of Season 1, so maybe how she's exploring that, and how, in her way, showing her emotions and story in her music is gonna be something that she's going to have to learn because she hasn't been able to do that. So I think that's going to be a really fun journey for her, and it's not as daunting as it was for her in earlier episodes, so it's going to be really beautiful.”
While we wait for more updates on Off Campus Season 2, be sure to watch Bright’s full Collider Ladies Night interview in the video at the top of this article to learn more about her experience growing up on Malory Towers, what it was like meeting Belmont Cameli during the audition stage of Off Campus, how it felt doing Hannah’s big showcase scene in Off Campus Season 1, and loads more!
