Nicole Kidman Reveals How 2003 Oscar Win Changed Her Life
Nicole Kidman had one most life-changing hours of her life.
In fact, the Oscar winner remembered exactly how picking up the coveted statue at the 2003 Oscars for her role as Virginia Woolf in 2002’s The Hours changed the trajectory of her career.
“There was Moulin Rouge, The Hours, The Others,” Nicole exclusively shared with Zuri Hall during Live From E!: Oscars 2026 March 15, “and it all sort of came in the same time period.”
The 58-year-old—who looked stunning in a feathered Chanel gown and is set to present at the Conan O’Brien-hosted ceremony at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood—added, “It was overwhelming at the time, but it was incredibly exciting as well.” (For every star on the Oscars 2026 red carpet, see here.)
Since her big win for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Nicole—who finalized her divorce from Keith Urban in January, with whom she shares daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14—has been candid about how difficult her life was at the time she earned the award. Especially as it came two years after her divorce from Tom Cruise, with whom she shares children Isabella Cruise, 32, and Connor Cruise, 30.
“When I won the Oscar, I went home and I didn’t have [love] in my life,” she said in 2014, per Vanity Fair. "That was the most intensely lonely experience in my life.”
“Strangely for me, the greatest highs have coincided with the greatest lows,” Nicole continued. “So [during] my professional highs a lot of times I’ve had personal lows and they’ve collided.”
She admitted at the time, “That’s always aggravated me that it’s gone that way.”

And her post-winning celebrations were also tinged with sadness.
"I need a new life. Please," she recalled thinking on The Jess Cagle Show in 2024. "I'm sitting here and I don't have anyone, as I say, to jump on the bed with. There's certain times when you just go, 'I need to jump on the bed.'"
She added, "I want to order French fries and a burger and celebrate this with my lover and I don't have one."
