Netflix routinely flexes its popularity by being a destination for movie stars, and that's no different for its next blockbuster film. The streaming service is about to bring two major action actors together for a thrilling adventure after previously working with both performers in prior movies.
Nowadays, it can be hard to find stars who haven't ventured to Netflix, especially to headline massive, adrenaline-filled blockbusters. Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, Chris Hemsworth, Jamie Foxx, Chris Evans, Cameron Diaz, Ryan Gosling, Millie Bobby Brown, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac, Jessica Alba, Aaron Pierre, Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Momoa, and Anthony Mackie are among the dozens of actors who have done so.
One of the common trends with these star-driven Netflix action movies is that they unite multiple celebrities with global recognition. That was the case with Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot teaming up for Red Notice, Evans and Gosling uniting for The Gray Man, and Affleck and Isaac being among the stars of Triple Frontier.
Netflix is now on the precipice of releasing a new action blockbuster, Apex, that follows a rock climber evading a hunter in a remote location. It hits the streaming service this Friday, April 24, and has major stars in the lead roles with Taron Egerton and Charlize Theron. Their involvement brings two of Netflix's biggest stars together.
Taron Egerton & Charlize Theron Have Headlined Major Netflix Action Movies Before
Image via NetflixWhile Apex marks the first time that Egerton and Theron will work together in any capacity, each has experience working with Netflix. They both have proven to be successful partners for the streamer by delivering hits in Carry-On and the Old Guard franchise.
Theron's ties with Netflix are longer and deeper. She took on the lead role in 2020's The Old Guard, which received excellent reviews and was viewed by 78 million households in its first four weeks of release (via Variety). That gave Netflix a desire to move forward with franchise ambitions for the comic book adaptation. The Old Guard 2 was an instant global hit when it finally came out in 2025, generating 37.5 million views in its first week alone.
Those movies proved once more how skilled Theron is in the action movie genre. And while not an action movie, she was also prominently featured in Paul Feig's 2022 fantasy film for Netflix, The School for Good and Evil. It also proved to be quite popular among subscribers, even if reactions were more mixed. This makes Apex the fourth Netflix movie for Theron.
Egerton, on the other hand, is co-starring in the movie after being at the center of Netflix's third-most-watched movie ever. Carry-On received 172.1 million views in its first 91 days, according to the streamer's charts. The action-thriller was an excellent showcase of the actor's abilities, not only physically, but also emotionally.
He might be newer to Netflix than his Apex co-star, but they have both delivered viewership numbers the streamer hoped for. Now that their star power is coming together, it will be great to see them share the screen and wait to discover if the new action movie cracks Netflix's top 10 most-watched movies ever.
Apex Brings Taron Egerton & Charlize Theron Together In An Exciting Way
Having action stars of Egerton and Theron's caliber together in any capacity is tantalizing, but Apex is pulling off this union in a more enticing manner. Rather than follow the typical pattern of having the two stars play characters who work together, either harmoniously or hesitantly, the action-thriller revolves around them being at odds.
Apex's story has Theron playing a rock climber who gets lost in the wilderness, with Egerton's character a hunter who tries to track and kill her. This won't be a buddy action movie between two huge stars. It'll completely focus on Theron versus Egerton, with only one of them likely to make it out of the finale alive.
This sets up Apex to feature plenty of exhilarating set pieces, tense showdowns, and brutal fights as they come face to face. Based on how well-suited Egerton and Theron have proven to be in their previous action movies, seeing them in opposition is more appealing than a team-up.
