Netflix has released dozens of successful projects in 2026 both on the movie and TV side of development, but if there’s one thing we’ve learned about the streamer this year, it’s that a series making the top 10 is not grounds for renewal. One of the most shocking cancellations of the year came back when Netflix debuted all episodes of its hit new sci-fi series, The Boroughs, which was hailed as the next Stranger Things. What made these comparisons even more apt is that the show was produced by Matt and Ross Duffer, who are the creators of Stranger Things. Less than two weeks after all episodes of The Boroughs began streaming, Netflix announced that the show had been canceled — reports explaining the cancellation say that Netflix could not justify the cost of another season based on the projected viewership.
