For years, anime fans associated blockbuster shonen releases with Crunchyroll. The platform built its reputation on simulcasts, exclusive premieres, and a massive anime catalog that few competitors could rival. That balance may be shifting again, however, after Netflix secured streaming rights for My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission in the United States beginning June 1, 2026.

The move, via What's on Netflix, is bigger than it first appears. My Hero Academia is one of the most recognizable modern shonen franchises, even after the anime officially wrapped up its main storyline in late 2025. By adding one of the series’ most successful theatrical films to its growing anime lineup, Netflix continues strengthening its position in a market once dominated almost entirely by Crunchyroll.

A Massive Shonen Anime Film Finally Heads To Netflix

Released in 2021, My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission arrived during the anime’s fifth season and quickly became a major success for Studio Bones. The film earned more than $47 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the highest-grossing movie in the franchise at the time. Its arrival on Netflix nearly five years later gives the platform another major anime exclusive attraction.

The timing also works perfectly for Netflix. Interest in My Hero Academia surged again after the anime’s emotional final season and the release of the special epilogue episode My Hero Academia: More earlier this month. Fans who finished the main series are now looking for additional content, and Netflix is stepping in at exactly the right moment.

What makes the situation more notable is that the film already streams on Crunchyroll and Prime Video. In the past, anime fans would almost automatically head toward Crunchyroll for movies tied to major shonen franchises. Netflix now offers a direct alternative, and its broader subscriber base gives these films exposure far beyond hardcore anime audiences.

Why World Heroes’ Mission Still Matters Five Years Later

My Hero Academia World Heroes Mission characters such as Deku, Bakugo, and Todoroki doing action poses together.

The movie takes place during the Endeavor Agency arc, shortly before the Paranormal Liberation War storyline begins. Deku, Bakugo, and Shoto travel overseas alongside Endeavor to stop Humarise, an extremist organization determined to eliminate everyone with quirks. Their weapon causes superpowered individuals to lose control of their abilities with deadly consequences.

Unlike many anime films that feel disconnected from their source material, World Heroes’ Mission maintained strong ties to the franchise. Although creator Kohei Horikoshi did not fully write the screenplay, he heavily supervised production and contributed original character concepts. Fan-favorite newcomer Rody Soul later appeared briefly in the manga’s final arc, giving the film stronger canon relevance than many expected.

The film also showcased the franchise at its peak popularity. At the time of release, My Hero Academia stood alongside franchises like Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Jujutsu Kaisen as one of the defining modern shonen properties. That popularity never truly disappeared, even after the manga and anime concluded their central narrative.

Netflix’s Anime Push Is Becoming Impossible To Ignore

Netflix has spent years aggressively expanding its anime library, but adding recognizable shonen titles carries a different kind of weight. Original productions helped the service gain credibility, yet landing established franchises with passionate fanbases creates far more competition for Crunchyroll. Movies tied to globally recognized series immediately attract viewers who may not normally subscribe to anime-focused services.

Crunchyroll Officially Dethroned As Top Anime Streamer

The anime streaming wars continue to heat up with the medium's ongoing rise in global popularity, and the frontrunner isn't who fans might expect.

Meanwhile, My Hero Academia itself is far from finished as a franchise. The series recently launched a dedicated 10th anniversary website filled with announcements and upcoming projects. One of the biggest reveals so far is a new anime short titled I Am A Hero Too, which focuses on Eri years after the Final War and explores her dream of becoming a singer.

Crunchyroll still remains the dominant anime-first platform, but Netflix continues proving it wants a larger share of the market. Securing World Heroes’ Mission may not completely change the streaming landscape overnight, but it shows that major shonen franchises are no longer tied to just one home. For anime fans, the streaming wars are becoming much more competitive.
