CBSNCIS: Sydney season 4 is on the way, and there’s already a fair amount that’s been revealed about the show’s return.
In 2023, the NCIS franchise delivered its fourth spinoff, and the first set outside the United States. Created by Morgan O’Neill, NCIS: Sydney introduced NCIS agents Michelle Mackey and DeShawn Jackson, who were transferred the title Australian city. Now they work with Australian Federal Police personnel Jim “J.D.” Dempsey, Evie Cooper, Bluebird Gleeson and Roy “Rosie” Penrose to investigate, as with the other NCIS shows, crimes tied to the United States Navy.
The Australian-produced spinoff was renewed for season 2 in March 2024 and had its episode order expanded from eight to 10. Then season 3 was ordered in February 2025 and ended its run with 20 episodes, double the number of its predecessor. NCIS: Sydney season 3 was also notable for introducing a new member to the core team, ex-bomb tech Travis “Trigger” Riggs.
Between its availability on CBS in the United States and streaming globally on Paramount+, NCIS: Sydney has grown a sizable fan base in the last several years. With that comes a growing interest in what's next for Mackey, J.D., and the rest of the crew moving forward.
CBS Already Renewed NCIS: Sydney For Season 4
CBSNCIS: Sydney season 4 officially happening. In January 2026, three months after season 3 premiered, the show was greenlit for the 2026-2027 TV cycle. This news came the same day that NCIS season 24 and NCIS: Origins season 3 were announced, amidst news of other returning CBS programming. This makes NCIS: Sydney lasting longer than NCIS: Hawai’i, which was only on the air for three seasons (though it currently still has the larger number of episodes between the two shows).
When Will NCIS: Sydney Season 4 Release?
CBSInstead of premiering on CBS’s fall 2026 TV schedule, NCIS: Sydney season 4 will revert to being a midseason show, just like it was during its first two seasons. Tuesday nights in the fall will see NCIS continuing to air at 8 p.m. ET, followed by the new series NCIS: New York (led by NCIS: Los Angeles alum LL Cool J) airing at 9 p.m. ET, and then NCIS: Origins is taking over Sydney’s 10 p.m. ET timeslot.
This programming shift comes as a result of NCIS: Sydney and NCIS: Origins both having their episode orders trimmed to 10 each for their coming seasons. So NCIS: Sydney season 4 will have the same number of episodes it did in season 2, and Origins will have eight episodes less than it did its previous two seasons.
What NCIS: Sydney Season 4's Story Could Be
CBSNo official plot details have been disclosed for NCIS: Sydney season 4 yet. However, there are some plot threads from season 3 that could be followed up on in the next batch of episodes.
For example, the season 3 episode “The Collective” finally introduced Mackey’s son, Trey. After the possibility of Trey being in danger in the United States was presented, Mackey moved Trey out to Sydney so she could keep an eye on him. As such, it’s possible that Trey could become a recurring character in season 4 if his stay in Australia is extended.
Other avenues that could potentially be explored include Evie and Trigger’s out-of-office dynamic being fully explored. It’s been strongly implied there are romantic sparks between the two, so whether they’re currently hooking up or still figuring out what they are to each other, perhaps they’ll officially become a couple in season 4. Rosie has also been having luck on the romantic front with fellow ME Dr. Kate Harvey, so perhaps fans will see more of her, too.
What remains difficult to pull off is crossing over NCIS: Sydney with one of the other shows in the franchise. This is due to it filming on another continent, but depending on how the filming schedule shapes out, maybe there will finally be an opportunity to bring someone from another corner of the NCIS universe out to Sydney.
