How does this keep happening?

Every time some kind of Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair deck gets shipped, Wizards of the Coast seems to accidentally send an unrevealed product to a select few customers, resulting in leaks. That’s exactly what happened when some people purchased the Dandan Secret Lair in March, but received the Goblin Storm Commander deck instead. Now, at least one person who bought the Goblin Storm deck earlier this month claims to have received a previously unrevealed green-white Commander deck featuring virtual pop star Hatsune Miku.

A new eBay seller called thenerdysatyr listed the deck for sale on Wednesday for a starting price of $500. As of this writing, 36 bids have pushed the price up to $3,051. The description claims that the seller received it instead of a Goblin Storm deck. The Hatsune Miku deck remains sealed, so only the top card is visible. Not even the seller knows what’s inside the rest of the deck — which is probably a smart choice, since that only increases its potential sale value. Based on the context and photos provided, this leak does appear to be legitimate. The bidders certainly seem to believe it. The eBay sale for the deck ends on June 2, so it’s possible the winning bidder might wind up leaking the full decklist sometime after they receive it.

Miku, Song of the People is the one card revealed through this leak. It’s a reprint of Trostani, Selesnya's Voice, a fitting choice for a vocalist. Originally printed in 2012’s Return to Ravnica set, Trostani costs two green and two white mana for a 2/5 legendary dryad. Whenever another creature enters the battlefield under the player’s control, that player gains life equal to that creature’s toughness. For a cost of three mana, Trostani can also tap to trigger Populate (create a token that’s a copy of a creature token you control).

The strategy of a Trostani deck is pretty straightforward: ramp up quickly, create lots of creature tokens while playing big creatures, and lean into lifegain synergies. In theory, you can also dip into +1/+1 counter strategies to buff your creature tokens, then copy those using Populate, further increasing those lifegains.

As a Commander, Trostani is ranked 464 in terms of popularity, according to EDHREC. Previous printings of the card aren’t all that expensive, and cost between $1 and $5 on sites like TCG Player.

A factor that lends further legitimacy to this leak: Secret Lair already has a history with Hatsune Miku. Wizards released four Secret Lair Drops starring the character in 2024, each one themed after a season. If this new deck includes any of those cards, then we’re looking at a hugely powerful deck indeed. The Electric Entourage Drop alone had Miku, Divine Diva as a reprint of the Elspeth Tirel and Miku, Voice of Power as a reprint of Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury. Both of these planeswalkers — one white and one green — create creature tokens.

How do these Secret Lair leaks keep happening? Magic head designer Mark Rosewater fielded a question about Secret Lair’s limited-print run model on his Blogatog Tumblr blog earlier this month. In his response, he confirmed that Wizards is reserving printing time a year in advance. In other words, every Secret Lair Drop is sent to the printer 12 months before release. As you read this, somewhere out there a May 2027 Drop is probably getting printed. Assuming there is some kind of consistent mistake happening in the production pipeline, then this Hatsune Miku Commander deck might be released via Secret Lair in just a few months, possibly in the early fall.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t sell out instantly and then fetch absurd secondary market prices, like the Goblin Storm deck did.
