Can't Afford Resident Evil Requiem Right Now? No Problem
There's Something To Try
If you head over to the PSN, you can pick up the first episode of Resident Evil Revelations 2 (Penal Colony) for free. Featuring a Saw-like premise, you'll wake up in an asylum and fight your way out, uncovering secrets and literal revelations along the way.
Here's the setup, and why Claire is returning: "Survivor of the Raccoon City incident depicted in previous Resident Evil games, Claire now works for the anti-bioterrorism organization Terra Save. Moira Burton, is attending her welcome party for Terra Save when unknown armed forces storm the office. Claire and Moira are knocked unconscious and awaken later to find themselves in a dark and abandoned detention facility. Working together, they must find out who took them and to what sinister end. Will Claire and Moira make it out alive and discover what’s led to them being taken to this remote island? A story of twists and turns will have players guessing the next step at every turn."
In case you're wondering, this is one of the few Resident Evil games to feature couch co-op, so it's a worthwhile game to pick up if you know any series fans. It's completely playable solo if you'd rather go that route.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 Is Severely Underrated
It Also Has An Extensive Raid Mode
Released in 2015 in an episodic format (and again in a complete edition), Resident Evil: Revelations 2 is an underrated entry in the RE series. Claire Redfield and Barry Burton return, as well as a host of new characters and storylines that intertwine with numerous franchise entries. It's also fully co-op-enabled, just like Resident Evil 5, with many asynchronous mechanics designed to take advantage of that co-op format.
For instance, one player can point out invisible enemies to another player, who has to take them down. You can also use the pincer technique on enemies to create some really satisfying combat situations, all with Resident Evil's signature flavor. Plus, there's an enhanced Raid Mode, which is kind of like a modified version of the Mercenaries gametype. It even has its own lobby and set of unlockables, and can be considered a game in its own right.
The point is, you should check out Resident Evil Revelations 2 if you haven't already. Its uneven episodic format was polarizing at the time, but with hindsight and a complete format available, it doesn't get nearly enough respect.
