Dark Souls is an institution at this point. It spawned a whole subgenre of games, and although Demon's Souls came first on PS3, Dark Souls really cemented the series' pedigree and set the tone going forward. Some fans feel it's fine as is (or prefer the remaster), but others have been clamoring for a remake.
Over on YouTube, you can get a look at a seriously impressive remaster that has fans stunned by how well it's turning out.
This Unofficial Dark Souls Remaster Is Stunning
It's Worth Another Playthrough
The Dark Souls RTX Remix project is progressing nicely, and we got to see an early work-in-progress test this week. The clip shows off a few key areas of the game, including the Undead Burg and Anor Londo. The detail in the latter is impressive, and fans are begging the project not to clutter it up with fog "like other RTX projects."
Gabdeg credits the following community members for the project: "Done with the Vibe Reverse Engineering toolset by E-Man, with contributions by Kim, based on xoxor4d's CodeBase for Remix Compatiblity Mods. Sky implementation by CR. It wouldn't have been possible without these great folks and their hard work!"
There is some criticism, though, best voiced by this comment on the video: "The issue with realism is that original designs had deliberate lighting. So here, when you add realistic lighting, it looks ok in the open areas and completely breaks indoors, having no visibility whatsoever. Then to fix this, you would have to add light sources, such as torches, but then you need them to fit with the architecture, physics, etc., and it will start changing the level design one way or the other."
While some folks don't like how this particular remaster looks, the best part is that it's optional. As a mod for the Dark Souls: Remastered PC edition, it's easy to skip if you don't want it. Heck, even the original pre-remastered versions are accessible on certain platforms.
There's No Word On A Release Date Yet
We Can Wait
Although a full release date hasn't been set for the Dark Souls RTX Remix project, work seems to be moving at a steady pace. There are reportedly "lots and lots of bugs" to fix before release, so it could take a while. According to one of the creators, they'll "release a public version as soon as it's more stable and the obvious graphical flaws are fixed." At first glance, it seems like the HUD needs to be fixed, with some flickering.
There have been a number of Dark Souls fan projects, some of which add new content or just remix the original. It's still an incredibly popular game to mod, and the community will probably chip away at it for decades to come.
Plus, there's a chance we could see another Dark Souls Remastered at some point, too, or a next-generation update. Fans will definitely want Bloodborne addressed first, though.
