While it is uncertain whether Sinners will be followed up with a sequel, viewers looking for something similar to the Ryan Coogler movie must check out one of Mike Flanagan's best horror shows.

Sinners is leading the Oscar run this year by landing nominations in the highest number of categories. It has achieved monumental feats that only a few horror movies get to experience. And after watching the movie, it is hard not to deny that it deserves all the acclaim and appreciation it has been receiving. Since Sinners is one of its kind, no other show or movie can replace it.

However, a closer look at a Mike Flanagan Netflix show reveals intriguing thematic parallels, making it Sinners' perfect follow-up.

Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass Is The Perfect Show For Fans Of Ryan Coogler’s Oscar-Nominated Movie

Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass and Ryan Coogler's Sinners might come off as two distinct additions to the horror genre. However, a closer look at both reveals many intriguing similarities. For instance, in both, vampires are neither antagonists nor portrayed as heroic figures. Instead, they are captured as complex narrative devices to explore faith and assimilation.

While Coogler uses vampirism as a metaphor for cultural erasure and loss of identity, Flanagan uses them to explore religious extremism and humanity's fear of death.

When Mike Flanagan watched Sinners, he could not help but compliment the movie by calling its vampires "a metaphorical wrapper for a story about racial and cultural identity, appropriation, and legacy." His review (via Letterboxd) itself serves as solid reminder of how, just like Sinners, Midnight Mass, too, uses horror not merely to frighten audiences but to unpack deeper anxieties about belonging, belief, and the lengths people are willing to go to preserve themselves.

Blood is also portrayed more as a spiritual currency in both. While the "infected" ones in Midnight Mass end up losing the very essence of their humanity to achieve immortality, the vampires in Sinners gain a twisted sense of equality through assimilation but lose their freedom.

With so many fascinating overlaps between Midnight Mass and Sinners, viewers who have seen one of the two must watch the other.

Like Sinners, Midnight Mass Also Deserves A Direct Sequel

Even though Sinners is easily one of 2025's most acclaimed and commercially successful movies, its sequel has not been officially greenlit. After watching the first film, however, it is hard not to hope that it will be followed up with another installment. The follow-up could also work incredibly well as a prequel that focuses on Remmick's backstory.

Similarly, Midnight Mass, too, is a miniseries that ends on a fairly conclusive note. However, its season 1 leaves enough room for more in-universe stories about vampirism and how it can be mistaken for divine intervention or miraculous salvation.

Since Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass premiered half a decade ago, it seems unlikely it will be followed up by another season. Sinners, however, might still get a follow-up after a record-breaking performance at the Academy Awards. Hopefully, Ryan Coogler will eventually consider expanding Sinners' lore with a sequel.
