Marvel has shared updated information about its new Fantastic Four team, including an awesome new image of the quartet showcasing their powers. Fans have also learned the codename of the new team, who have stolen the powers of the classic Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Benjamin Grimm quartet.
The Fantastic Four may be a family, but they've often allowed new heroes into their ranks, including the Black Panther, X-Men's Storm and She-Hulk. However, this time the team has transformed in a dramatic new way...
Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four Debuts the "Apetastic Four"
Marvel's new Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four crossover has seen the Red Ghost and Doctor Doom exile the team to Ape City, where their powers have been transferred to its simian inhabitants. Classic Planet of the Apes characters have inherited the team's abilities, as seen in Greg Land and Rachelle Rosenberg's cover for the series' second issue.
In the image, Zira uses her new invisibility, Cornelius elongates his body, Dr. Zaius is covered in the Thing's rocky carapace, and the villainous General Ursus roars, surrounded by the Human Torch's flames. Meanwhile, the recently revealed summary for issue three names the team as "The Apetastic Four" and states they'll use their new powers to shut down a rebellion. The issue's summary reads:
Planet of the Apes' Classic Characters Get Wild New Powers
This crossover may seem incredibly random, but it makes more sense than casual fans may think. The Fantastic Four have always been about adventure and exploration, acting as the discoverers of new groups like the Skrulls, the Inhumans and the insectoid denizens of the Negative Zone, all with a retro sci-fi feel. What's more, the Red Ghost has long commanded three superpowered apes as his sidekicks.
Throw those ingredients together and not only do the Fantastic Four mesh with the idea of exploring a classic sci-fi franchise, but they even have an ape-obsessed villain who can kick off the story. However, this crossover isn't just a treat for Marvel fans - Planet of the Apes fans get to see their favorite characters in a dramatic new situation.
However, few people were expecting Dr. Zaius et al. to develop full-blown superpowers as the Apetastic Four, throwing a volatile new complication into the fate of this beloved sci-fi world. Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four is more than living up to its name, with a simian twist on the classic team.
Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four #1 is available now from Marvel Comics, with issues #2 and #3 coming March 11 and April 15 respectively.
