Marvel officially introduces a new MCU villain from The Fantastic Four: First Steps' Earth-828 universe who could eventually appear in a movie following the team's return in Avengers: Doomsday. While two characters have serve as the Fantastic Four's main antagonists in the MCU, several other FF villains make a short appearance and others are namedropped.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps centers around Ralph Ineson's Galactus and Julia Garner's Silver Surfer, but it also introduces Mole Man and Giganto and references Red Ghost and his Super Apes, Diablo, Puppet Master, the Wizard, and Doctor Doom, some of whom also appear in First Steps' animated post-credits scene. Clearly, the Fantastic Four are just as experienced as the Avengers in their universe, with an entire league of foes of their own.

The Fantastic Four either bury the hatchet or apprehend their biggest foes in order to focus their efforts on stopping Galactus in First Steps, but their classic enemies can still return.

In between their introduction in The Fantastic Four: First Steps and their return in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel presents a new chapter in the Fantastic Four's MCU story. The Fantastic Four: First Foes revisits the team's space mission aboard the Excelsior, revealing that René Rodin aka the Mad Thinker had a crucial role in it. Apparently, Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards personally handpicked the Mad Thinker to be the mission's leader on the ground, as the Marvel villain is the only other person who could compute the "calculations required to successfully achieve faster-than-light travel."

Surprisingly, René Rodin singlehandedly came up with the precise calculations to course-correct the Excelsior and save the Fantastic Four's lives. This feat earns Rodin the moniker of "The Great Thinker," but his arrogant attitude plants the seeds for his downfall. The Mad Thinker is one of the many Marvel villains who get namedropped in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, meaning he becomes a criminal and joins the Fantastic Four's rogues' gallery not too long afterward.

The Fantastic Four introduced multiple new villain, but a throwaway joke might have totally wasted one of the coolest potential MCU future threats.

Marvel's first The Fantastic Four: First Steps prequel comic, released on July 9, 2025, reveals more details about the team's early days in the MCU's Earth-828, but it makes no mention of René Rodin's role in the Excelsior's iconic mission. The 2025 First Steps prequel comic features in-universe interviews with the heroes. One of the interviews praises Reed Richards' genius and credits the intellectual work on the Excelsior exclusively to him. Hence, it's easy to connect the dots about why René Rodin turned into the villainous Mad Thinker in the MCU.

The Fantastic Four's Most Famous Enemies Deserve A Proper Live-Action Appearance

The Fantastic Four's Lore Remains Largely Unexplored

The Fantastic Four's villains fight together in Marvel Comics

Marvel's First Family hasn't been as lucky as the Avengers and Spider-Man when it comes to live-action adaptations. Beyond the inconsistent quality of their movies, the Fantastic Four have only fought a very limited number of enemies on the big screen. Doctor Doom has struggled to live up to his full potential, while Super Skrull, Kang the Conqueror, and Ronan the Accuser had disappointing adaptations in the MCU before their early death.

Although the MCU's Fantastic Four have already fought and defeated many of their famous rogues, future MCU projects could revisit their fights in flashback scenes and new montage sequences. Since the Fantastic Four are expected to join the MCU's main timeline following Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, flashback scenes and tie-in comics may be the best way to explore their early days. Otherwise, many movie-worthy battles and stories would be lost.
