Ludwig Göransson Pays Touching Tribute To His Dad As He Wins Third Career Oscar For Scoring ‘Sinners’

Swedish musician Ludwig Göransson cemented his status as the most decorated film composer of the decade, winning three of the past eight Oscars for Best Original Score out of three nominations in the category. His third statuette came for his work on Ryan Coogler’s Sinners.

In accepting the award, Göransson explained how a guy from Sweden got to score the blues-infused score of the Mississippi-set Sinners.

“My dad bought his first blues album in Sweden in 1964,” he said. “It was a John Lee Hooker album, and even though it was on the other side of the world from a place he’d never been and could not relate to, the music was so powerful that it changed my dad’s life, and he devoted his whole life to music. And when I was about seven-years-old, a little boy, he put a guitar in my arms. I loved the guitar, it became everything to me. And it was the guitar that opened up a lot of doors for me, and was the guitar that brought me over to the States, and it was the guitar that eventually led me to one of the greatest storytellers of our time, Ryan Coogler.”

A Coogler collaborator since the filmmaker’s debut, Fruitvale Station, Göransson won his first Oscar for their third movie together, Black Panther.

“Thank you for your vision and making a movie that resonated with the whole world,” Göransson said to Googler from the Oscar stage. You can watch the video below.

Göransson’s second Oscar came for a movie of another frequent collaborator of his, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The duo may both be headed back to the Oscars next year for their latest effort together, The Odyssey.
