After Parent Trap director Nancy Meyers reacted to the death of her ex-husband Charles Shyer, with whom she co-wrote the beloved 1998 comedy that marked her directorial debut, on social media, the film’s star reflected on the impact Charles had on her.
“I am so sad to hear about the passing of my dear friend, Charles Shyer,” Lindsay wrote on her Instagram Stories Dec. 29 alongside a photo with her and the Parent Trap co-writer on set. “He will always be in my heart, as will all my fond memories of him. My thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
While The Parent Trap launched Lindsay to stardom, it marked the final collaboration between Nancy and Charles, who separated in 1999, the year after the film’s release. The filmmaking former couple—who shared daughters Annie Meyers-Shyer and Hallie Meyers-Shyer—first joined forces to co-write 1980’s Private Benjamin alongside Harvey Miller.
After marrying that same year, they collaborated on several films throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, including Irreconcilable Differences, Baby Boom and both Father of the Bride movies, all of which he directed.

While they stopped making movies together after their marriage ended, the duo later formed a strong friendship (and he even directed Lindsay and James Franco’s fictional action film featured in Nancy’s movie The Holiday). In her own tribute to her late ex, Nancy looked back on their collaborative dynamic, sharing two photos of her and Charles on set together.
Alongside a broken heart emoji, the Intern director simply captioned the photos, “Charles Shyer 1941 -2024.”
In the comment section, Lindsay echoed Nancy by sharing her own broken heart emoji, while her mom Dina Lohan added, “So sorry for your loss.”
Several cast members from Nancy and Charles’ films together also shared their heartbreak, including Father of the Bride’s Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who commented with a trio of heart emojis, and Parent Trap’s Lisa Ann Walter.
“So sorry for your family’s loss,” the Abbott Elementary star wrote. “Please give my condolences to the girls.”
Charles and Nancy’s daughter Hallie summed up the pics with, “My people.”
