Shows that run for decades often aren't able to hold onto main cast members for the entire run, but Law & Order: SVU stands out from the rest by hanging on to both Mariska Hargitay and Ice-T from nearly the very beginning. That said, while both actors have appeared in nearly 600 episodes of the long-running NBC drama, Benson was missing her right-hand man for a lot of season 27.

Season 27 changed the cast in some key ways, even beyond Fin stepping back from the sexually-based offenses that are considered especially heinous. Kelli Giddish returned as Amanda Rollins, which was a factor in why Ice-T has appeared less frequently. Captain Curry was officially part of Benson's team for much of the season, and even Velasco appeared several times despite Octavio Pisano leaving as a series regular. SVU wasn't short on characters, but seeing less of the actor who was in his 26th year in the franchise was hard to ignore.

Ice-T only had good things to say about Kelli Giddish's return, so there was no sign of bad blood between cast members. SVU's ongoing success hasn't meant that the drama avoided the budget cuts that have affected many major network TV dramas in recent years. Mariska Hargitay's episode count is almost certainly never going to be cut unless she decides to step back like Ellen Pompeo did on Grey's Anatomy. SVU just cut Fin to make room for more in season 27, but now, early details surrounding Law & Order: SVU season 28 suggest that Ice-T is going to be back for more episodes as Odafin Tutuola.

Law & Order: SVU Is Fixing Its Ice-T Concern In Season 28

Fin was back in the mix for the last few episodes of season 27, which was enough to remind viewers of what they'd been missing. The excuses for his absences had grown increasingly thin. His injury at the beginning of the season worked to keep him out of the action early on, but not necessarily for the majority of the next 20 episodes. Fortunately, showrunner Michele Fazekas dropped a short but sweet comment to TVLine, revealing, "I think we'll have Ice-T more" when discussing Law & Order: SVU season 28.

SVU featuring the second-billed star in "more" of season 28 doesn't mean that Fin will be bantering with Benson every week, and Fazekas went on to confirm that the leading lady will "obviously" still be in "every single episode." Still, the showrunner's comments bode well for SVU fixing what fans were missing in season 27. She elaborated on the role that he'll play in the unit when the drama returns in the fall:

Fin is like the pinch hitter. The way I see Fin is almost like the Number 2 for Benson. I want to see him more in a training capacity in the next season.

Considering that Fin has been part of Special Victims since season 2, and that Ice-T is behind only Mariska Hargitay among actors who appeared in the most episodes of the franchise, nobody else could qualify as Benson's "Number 2." His fan-favorite role is likely part of why SVU earned its top spot on the ranking of every Law & Order franchise series. Fin was almost literally Benson's "pinch hitter" at the end of season 27, when he came in to lead the unit after she was suspended.

Fin's dynamic with Bruno, played by Kevin Kane, has been fun as well, ever since the former Bronx SVU detective came to Benson's unit, and Fin slipped right back into his old rhythm with Rollins in season 27. The writers' room for season 28 only recently opened up, so details about his role in the fall may be scarce for a while, but the tease that there will be "more" of Ice-T is a good sign.

Law & Order: SVU's Cast Balance Is A Good Problem To Have

In the grand scheme of things, there are worse problems for a show to have than too many characters who are key to solving the – to quote the opening narration – "vicious felonies" year in and year out. Budget constraints could have seriously affected how the show works, but cast members have continued to be willing to come back. Kelli Giddish even returned despite being unceremoniously cut from SVU years earlier.

The 25 Best Law & Order: SVU Episodes

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been nominated for (and won) many awards, and its best episodes are a big reason why.

Ice-T has always spoken highly of Mariska Hargitay, and there seems to be no danger of permanently losing Fin as Benson's right-hand man unless SVU writes him out. The cast changes in recent seasons have also been largely positive. SVU often felt like it had a shortage of women in the department in the early seasons, especially given the sensitive nature of the crimes that mostly affect women. Curry officially joining the unit and Rollins coming back fixed that particular problem, and season 28 seems poised to fix the Ice-T problem as well.

Plus, the show's knack for switching up partnerships has been fun. SVU may have become the iconic hit that it is today thanks to the partnerships of Benson/Stabler and Fin/Munch under the leadership of Captain Cragen back in the day, but a series doesn't last for 27 seasons (and counting) without changing up the formula. Fin and Bruno are a highlight whenever they're put together, as well as Benson and Curry. The unit feels healthier nowadays than it did back when Benson and Stabler were codependent. (Benson and Stabler's codependency was entertaining, but not healthy.)

All in all, it's a good thing that Law & Order: SVU is returning in the fall, rather than midseason, so that fans can get more of the cast (and Ice-T) back together in primetime.
