Expect Peter Parker's next Marvel Cinematic Universe story to go deeper into the comic canon.
Director Destin Daniel Cretton also reaffirmed this to be the case, saying that Peter Parker “is dedicating his entire existence to his job. That’s the core theme that I find incredibly relatable. I think most people at certain points in our lives have gone through loss. At least for me, and I think for many people, the result can be: ‘Screw it. I’m just going to work. I’m going to do nothing else but work.’ That’s obviously not the most healthy state.”
Former Sony CEO Amy Pascal, who has remained a producer on the MCU's Spider-Man movies between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures, also commented on the new direction for the web-crawler. She commented that “[Brand New Day] is a more internal movie and the bigness of it is emotional, not worlds exploding.”
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day story will center on the web-slinger years after the events of No Way Home, as Doctor Strange's spell has made the whole world forget who Peter is anymore. With no Avengers resources anymore, Holland's leading hero has no one but himself to rely on.
From the first trailer alone, it has been made clear that the upcoming MCU movie will definitely be treading on classic elements for the Marvel icon. That also includes his new suit, with Peter now having to make his own costume without Tony Stark's technology.
Whether or not other characters in the MCU timeline will eventually remember who Peter is remains to be seen. However, the bigger question is if Spider-Man will have a big role to play for the remainder of the Multiverse Saga.
After Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Marvel Studios has Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars coming up as the final Phase 6 films. As of this writing, Holland's hero has not been revealed to be involved in either team-up installment.
Given that Avengers: Secret Wars is set to start filming this summer, Holland could possibly be one of the many mystery heroes that will be part of the cast. There is also the chance that he has a secret cameo in Avengers: Doomsday, given that Marvel Studios hasn't revealed the full line-up for the December entry.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is officially swinging into theaters on July 31.
