Now, though, per Deadline, Costner is poised to star in a very different kind of project called Honeymoon with Harry. The dramedy from directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and screenwriters Dan Fogelman and Mike Million has set an April start for filming in the Australian state of Queensland, specifically in Brisbane and The Whitsundays tropical islands.
Jake Gyllenhaal costars opposite Costner in the Amazon MGM Studio production, with Sarah Pidgeon (I Know What You Did Last Summer) also starring. Honeymoon with Harry is based on the novel of the same name by Bart Baker. It doesn't yet have a theatrical release date planned, but the filming timeline suggests it could arrive late next year.
Marking a significant departure for Costner after the violent and epic Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, Honeymoon with Harry follows a rough-around-the-edges man (Gyllenhaal) who ends up sharing an unexpected journey with his fiancé's father-in-law (Costner) after a devastating tragedy upends their lives two days before the wedding. The two disparate travelers initially clash on their journey before forming an emotional bond.
Queensland's Minister for the Arts, John-Paul Langbroek, shared the following statement about the film and its start of production, highlighting the economic benefits for the area:
“During production, Honeymoon with Harry will contribute an estimated $51 million to the state’s economy and employ 215 people, as well as showcasing our state as a tourism destination to audiences around the world."
Honeymoon with Harry comes as Costner struggles to get his remaining Horizon films off the ground. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 has been completed and had its premiere at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2024. The sequel was originally scheduled for a theatrical release in August of that year, only months after Chapter 1, but the film was pulled after the lackluster reception to the first installment.
The first Horizon movie has a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed only $38 million worldwide.
Some filming on Chapter 3 has been completed, but this stalled due to financing troubles. None of Chapter 4 has been shot, and it's now looking increasingly unlikely that Costner will be able to complete his saga, at least in the way he originally envisioned.
Projects like Honeymoon with Harry could help, though. Costner put a great deal of his own money into Horizon, and it's possible that audiences will see the actor taking on more projects in the years to come, potentially in an effort to finish his long-gestating passion project.
